While the name may not be all that well-known, Philip K Dick was (IMO) actually one of the most influential of 20th century sci-fi authors, responsible for the stories that led to movies the likes of 'Total Recall', 'Blade Runner', 'Minority Report', 'The Adjustment Bureau' and 'Screamers'.

In fact, the idea for that last one ('Screamers') itself is one of the short stories in this anthology in 'Second Variety': I think it's about #6 in the anthology.

If you read that story, and if you've seen the film, you'll definitely make the connection!

Of the rest of the stories, some are better than others, but all are entertaining and even (occasionally) thought provoking.

I typically don't read books like this, and I'm not a big believer in the one anyway. But, I wanted to give it a try, because the synopsis made it sound interesting.
There are five different stories contained within this novel. It was engaging, and I always like a sci-fi story that's not too fantastical. The stories were all interesting in different ways, but some of the characters are incredibly stupid.
While I did like this novel, I thought it was super predictable. I knew how the majority of the stories were going to end about mid-way through. I'm still glad I got out of my comfort zone and read something I wouldn't normally read.

While it's a pulpy action movie, I disagree with the sheer amount of hate this movie received. I thought the characters were interesting, the stories fun, and the movie colorful.
