Goddess in the Stacks (553 KP) rated Sky in the Deep in Books

That oddness aside, I loved this story! I loved Eelyn's fierceness, and also her willingness to see the Riki as people too. Eventually, of course. In Eelyn we have the definition of a strong female character. (She's not the only one, either!) She is admired for her fierceness and strength, but not seen as any less female. Women are warriors in her culture too.
It's a pretty straightforward book, with a few graphic scenes of violence in the fights. Everything happened pretty much as I expected it to, but I still enjoyed seeing Eelyn grow and change throughout the book. It's also very atmospheric; I could almost hear the snow crunching beneath boots, the rushing roar of the mountain river, the quiet creaking of the frozen lake. Young's writing style pulls you right into the book and doesn't let you go.
Set aside your questions about the plot's logic and just enjoy this book. It's wonderful.

Scott Tostik (389 KP) rated Hatchet (2006) in Movies
Jan 4, 2019 (Updated Jan 4, 2019)
Epic performances from Joel David Moore, Dieon Richmond, Tamara Feldman and the always reliable killing machine, KANE FUCKING HODDER!!!!!
Sorry if I fanboy out about Kane... The man is a living legend of horror fandom. He is also one of the nicest, most genuinely thankful to his fans actor that i have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Anyways... Back to the task at hand.
Hatchet starts off strong... Never taking it's foot of the pedal for even one split second.
You may thibk to yourself before watching this, "Oh great. Another empty plotted excuse for bare breasted women get hacked to pieces... Big whoopity do!!!"
But, friends, let me reassure you... You will never see some of the kills in this movie done with this much love for the game attitude as the ones brought to film by the mind of Adam Green.
Seeing an annoying wifes head torn in half with someones bare hands... A face smoothed off with a fucking belt sander... And... Finally Kane gets his hands on Robert Englund and tears him limb from limb...
This is and always will be my favorite horror debut of all time.
Keep an eye out for Candyman himself Mr. Tony Todd as Voodoo Shop proprieter Rev. Zombie.
I can not say enough good things about this movie. Once you view it... You will not be disappointed.
Victor Crowley = Slasher God.
Kaz (232 KP) rated Stranger Things - Season 3 in TV

I was so happy that season 3 was on par with the season 1.
It does take a while to get going, I wasn't sure how all of the strands of story were going to tie together, but in the end, it all came together brilliantly.
I liked how we got to know secondary characters from season 2, for example, Erica and Billy. Also I loved the addition of Robin in the series. It felt like she had been in the show all along.
This series is definitely darker and more horror based than previous seasons. I could see influences from 80's horror films and so, this had plenty of gory scenes which made this more 'grown up', which I really liked.
I also really liked how this season commented on the problem of equality in the workplace for women. I also think that there were a lot of strong female characters throughout.
This series doesn't have too many lighter moments, but the omnes that are there, are extremely funny. I particularly loved the interactions between Dustin and Erica. There was also an epic moment with Dustin near the end of the season, which was just genius.
The series ended in a satisfactory way, it also had some emotional scenes. Also we are left with plenty of questions, which will hopefully be answered in season 4. I can't wait!
Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2204 KP) rated Revenge is Sweet in Books

This book gets off to a good start, with several strong suspects before Gene even dies. From there, we have fun watching Tally and Yolanda try to figure out who actually committed the crime. The clues are woven into the story well, but one aspect of the plot is never fully explained. Who killed Gene and why is solved, however. The book is written third person from both Tally and Yolanda’s points of view. These switches definitely help tell the story and are always easy to follow. The characters could have been stronger at the beginning of the book, but we do get some development by the time the book is over. This is the first in the series, and I’m sure the characters will get stronger as the series progresses. There is a recipe at the end for one of Tally’s specialties – homemade Twinkies. This is an entertaining debut in what could turn into a series as addicting as Tally’s sweets.
Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2204 KP) rated Murder on Memory Lake in Books

The book starts out with a couple of chapters that are little more than data dumps, giving us the background on the characters. Yes, we need to know the information, but it could have been slipped into the novel better. The mystery itself is strong with several viable suspects and a logical trail to the great climax with some fun red herrings along the way. Alberta and Jinx are joined by another couple family members, and the four women are a delight, making me laugh a few times. The book is written in omniscient point of view, but mostly sticking with Alberta and Jinx. It mostly works, but it allows for passages of the characters pondering life. These felt like they’d be more at home in a literary novel than a mystery. The book closes out with a few recipes. The bones of the book are good, but overall, it felt overwritten. There is enough enjoyable elements to the book that if you are curious about the book, I recommend you check it out and see what you think for yourself.
