"This knocked me sideways when it came out. I just didn't know how he'd done it. I had to go downstairs to the studio with a notebook, shut the door, and take notes, to try to work out what he was doing. What he does with the 808 drum sounds, the autotune, the abrupt echoes and delays, slowed-down guitars, distant pianos, the birdsong…then using bone-dry vocals one minute and church hall reverb the next…it's astonishing. It's also beautiful again, and sad. Beautiful and sad: that's a key theme for me.

"Robert Altman really deserves his own number and section, so I am tying three of his films. He was one of the rare filmmakers experimenting with form within the Hollywood system. He infused his work with fluid zooms to easily enter in and out of spaces and made social interactions feel more organic. He also used sound in experimental ways, pushing the form with overlapping dialogue. It’s so impressive that a studio funded an entire film based on a fever dream he had, starring two of my favorite actresses, Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek."

"My whole list would probably be full of painting books if I were to be marooned on an island for real. Actually, because of the weight of art books, I’d probably go through my studio and collect together all the images I’ve ripped out of painting books over the years and take them in a folder. But if I had to take one artist, it would be Rembrandt, and this book, “Rembrandt’s Universe,” has the largest collection of his works included, and I’ve ripped out multiple pages from it."

"I’ve mixed colors, painted and drawn with many lines of Rilke’s poetry circulating in my head — lines like, “and there were even bits of eternity in my intestines,” from “The Song of the Suicide.” I’ve made several bodies of work in recent years thinking about visualizing the line, “And one sees to the bottom of time.” Rilke’s “The Book of Images” and “Duino Elegies” are great companions. It’s the visceral, intense and mysterious quality to his words that hang in the air around my studio. “To work is to live without dying” was Rilke’s motto."

This is an adorable tale about two young sisters and their father moving into a new home. This place is a bit of a fixer upper but the whimsical and magical little house makes the whole place seem alive. The whole film is very memorable of a childhood filled with adventures through the woods and dreams of meeting strange new creatures. Although not one of my favorites of the Studio Ghibli films it still holds it own within the collection.
