Early 70s British costume-drama horror movie, so you know roughly what to expect - scientist consumed with hubris decides to play God, learns the hard way he doesn't have the full set of qualifications for the gig. But this is really a rather morbid Victorian melodrama, an impression which is only heightened by how primitive some of the special effects are (the asphyx puppet in particular is a bit of an eye-popper).

At a time when the average Hammer horror was brazenly carnal and exploitative, and Amicus' line of portmanteaus was recycling the same jokey twist endings, The Asphyx takes itself wholly seriously and is positively bleak throughout - the whole movie is about death and despair, and the effects this can have on people. (At one point the plot boils down to a race between two characters to see which one of them can commit suicide first.) The intensity of the telling (good performances from the leads) makes it somewhat mesmerising to watch, even if it's a slightly chilly and unsettling experience.

There are worse ways to spend two hours I guess...

Please no one say the book is better!

Sandra Bullock was the highlight of this movie I felt compelled to watch because of all the recent hype.

Some unexplained phenomena causes people throughout the world to lose it and begin committing suicide and the carnage begins. Soon there are not many people left and they have a hard time deciding who to trust and how to resolve their situation.

Others have said the movies was too long and I would agree. A twenty minute trim job would have done this movie well. The first act was the best part of the film as I felt the 2nd half lacked a lot of action and was slow moving.

I am probably one of those people who love vague or unexplained ending way more than most people do; however, this one was a disappointment.

I would say watch A Quiet Place, The Mist or Under the Skin instead.

Isabelle LaFayette attempts but fails, to end her own life in what her mother calls a selfish act. Her suicide attempt haunts her, along with her other past regrets and the inability to forgive herself.

Jack Riley comes into Isabelle’s life and becomes her first love. He makes her feel alive, but she cruelly pushes him away, mistakenly believing that she doesn't deserve to be happy. Can she find the strength to confront her pain and be released from her troublesome past?

Isabelle needs to break the rules that have been imprisoning her. It is the only way for her to move on and piece her heart back together again.

Izzy, as she is known to her friends, is an extremely likeable character and I could really empathise with her. I thought this book was very insightful and thought-provoking. Although I thought that some of the dialogue between Izzy and her new beau, Nick Sterling, was a little repetitive, I found it a very enjoyable read, The author's writing has depth and the ending was very good.
