Blazing Minds (92 KP) rated Black Panther (2018) in Movies

Black Panther (2018)
Black Panther (2018)
2018 | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi
The last time we saw Black Panther was in Captain America: Civil War, when we were introduced to the character and now we finally have the character-based movie that brings us more about the new King of Wakanda and his families history, we also get to see Wakanda and it is pretty stunning in RealD 3D.

It seems that Marvel has certainly found the key to making superhero movies that just look so great and Black Panther is no exception to their continued success, the movie looks great, it has a superb cast, the soundtrack is superb and the action is all in the places it needs to be, oh and the 3D is done in such a way that it has depth without any of those in your face moments.

The casting of Gal Gadot (1 more)
The correct spirit and mood for the film/character
Another CGI generic villain (0 more)
Finally seeing Wonder Woman for the first time, I am torn between joining the film's praise bandwagon and complaining about another stupid villain. While I certainly don't want to go back to the cheesy Bane, Poisin Ivy, Mr. Freeze days of old, I also am not a big fan of the generic CGI villain, in this case Ares, God of War. I would think they could come up with a happy medium using The Dark Knight as a basis for a complex, grounded human character.

As for Wonder Woman herself, I thought Gal Gadot was amazing in personality, spirit, and the physical embodiment of Wonder Woman as a modern, yet retro female superhero.

Unfortunately, the film's historical setting and perspective has already been done better in the first Captain America film, but had to be the way they did it to make it close to the comic book origin of the character. The scene where Wonder Woman emerges on the battlefield was very strong as you, the viewer, had been anticipating this moment throughout the first half of the film.

The use of CGI during some of the fight scenes with the Nazi soldiers was poor and looked very false. Even when she jumped great distances, I thought that looked fake and was more believable in a Hulk film or even the Wonder Woman TV series from the 1970s.

I also sorely missed an appearance by the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. They have said they will have her in the next film. They had better. 😊

Overall, I enjoyed the film more than most recent superhero flicks, but in 10 years, won't all these films just start to run together?

Why so serious?
This is the first film in a long time that I've come out of feeling very divided, and it's taken a rather lengthy internal debate on the way home to figure out how I really feel about it.

This starts off slow, very slow and I was worried that I was going to get very bored very quickly. However Joaquin Phoenix's performance is phenomenal and although he is disturbingly thin for this, he's brilliant to watch, even considering the subject matter. If it wasn't for the Gotham setting and mention of the Wayne's, this wouldn't feel like a DC superhero/villain film and this is my main criticism. I love how dark and gritty Joker is and that this is mainly a study about mental health, but I do wish it had a little more in it to tie it to it's source material. Even just a nod to his most well known origin story as seen in some of the other films would've made this even better. I've heard a lot of people say this is uncomfortable viewing, but I didnt see that myself. It's just a stark portrayal of mental health and it does very well in this respect. The violence is sparse yet fits well - I didn't think it was overdone or excessive. And the final act with the talk show and ending was sheer brilliance and really brought Joker towards the character we know and love. It's this final part that sold this film for me, and I'm interested to see how they fit this into the rest of the DC universe, and if we start seeing more superhero films that are much darker and realistic. This is definitely a good example to follow!

Awix (3310 KP) rated Hellboy (2019) in Movies

Apr 11, 2019 (Updated Apr 11, 2019)
Hellboy (2019)
Hellboy (2019)
2019 | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Headbanging new take on Mike Mignola's demonic superhero. Hellboy, summoned to end the world but raised to protect it, has to do battle with vampires, man-eating giants, murderous occultists, pig-headed fairies and an evil sorceress from Arthurian legend. Scores highly on the 'ugh' front with a lot of gore.

Directed by Neil Marshall, so taste and restraint are not much in evidence, while the script is extremely variable and most of the performances not much cop either. Were-beasts fight fairies, demons fight vampires, none of it makes a great deal of sense, and there's little sign of the wit and style of Guillermo del Toro's films about these characters. In the end the film has plenty of energy and a sense of humour about itself which keep it just about watchable, but it's still a bit of a disappointment.

Evan Smoak is a former secret operative who now uses his training to help those in danger. But his latest client may be more than he can handle when someone tries to kill her at their first meeting. Can Evan keep her safe?

While the book seems to start slowly, it soon becomes apparent that everything is important to the story being told here. It quickly turns into a book you can’t put down with twists and action that leave you anxious for the next in the series. Evan can be a bit of a superhero, but the seeds are planted to fully flesh him out as this new series progresses, and I can’t wait to see that happen.
