Creepy Japanese Mockumentary hits the right notes

My word, the Japanese just do great horror huh?

A lot of my favourite Horrors are Japanese, from the classy Ringu, Kairo and Ju-On films to the trashier 'One Missed Call', but they all sure a singular understanding of tension, and most of all dread.

These movies revelled in slow horror, in knowing that the threat is inescapable, and like Michael Myers or Jason Vorhees (In the good films) it needn't rush.

Noroi: The Curse continues this theme, with a slow burning documentary style movie about some curious supernatural phenomena, that leads an investigator down a jagged and twisting path to discover the origins of the titular curse.

Whilst the movie is slow paced, the feeling of unease kicks in very early...there is something lurking on the edge of the screen, threatening to show you something horrifying at all times, but remaining patient until the tension is built to an almost unbearable level.

The story moves between a few pivotal characters, all of whom are able to provide a very genuine performance, that helps keep the viewer in the moment and suspending disbelief enough to enjoy the movie as it was meant to be enjoyed.

I really enjoyed this one, and to be fair it ticked a lot of the boxes for me:

The Sisters Are Watching You

Paranormal Activity 1- hated it
Paranormal Activity 2- Better Than One.
Paranormal Activity 3- Its getting good.
Paranormal Activity 4- Paranormal Kinect.
Paranormal Activity TMO- Shotgun Powers.
This One- Sisters From Anethor Dimensons.

So It goes 3,4, This One, 2, 1 and TMO. Thats the order of how i liked them. This one, 3 and 4 are all good and 1, 2 and TMO are all awful/poor.

The Plot: Ryan Fleege (Chris J. Murray), his wife Emily (Brit Shaw) and their 7-year-old daughter Leila (Ivy George) are preparing for Christmas in their new home. After finding an old and mysterious camcorder, Ryan quickly learns that it can record strange apparitions that are invisible to the naked eye. When young Leila starts talking to an imaginary friend and displaying strange behavior, the couple soon find themselves in
a terrifying battle with a supernatural force.

So this franchise as a whole, is batting 3/6 which is 50%. So only 3 out of the 6 to me are good. I think this franchise as a whole got way overhyped to the point, were the had to keep making movie after movie, year after year. This franchise isnt that scary at all, its just people doing nothing for 70 mintues and the last 15-20 minutes gets intresting. This franchise is just cameras, more cameras and cameras and watching nothing happen around the house.

Thank god im finish with this franchise and never have to watch it again.

Wait their making a 7th one in 2021....

Wickedly good

My manager loves this show and lent me this first series to watch. After it being sat on my shelf for the past couple of months while I moved house, I finally had the time to sit and watch it this weekend... and I’m annoyed at myself for not watching it sooner!

Lucifer for me is very similar to other male protagonist led tv shows, like House, The Mentalist, Elementary etc but in some ways it’s better as the humour and the entire itself is a little darker and naughtier than these others, and it’s all the better for it. It’s basically a supernatural crime show, with some wonderful laugh out loud humour thrown in. You can really tell Neil Gaiman has had a hand in creating this! The stars of this show are the very clever writing and Tom Ellis as Lucifer. He plays Lucifer so well, so charming, wicked and yet lovable at the same time and the things he says are often downright hilarious. This show wouldn’t be half as good if he wasn’t in it. I liked the rest of the cast and characters too though, except for Chloe. I found her quite irritating, way too pouty and you can tell even from this first series that her and Lucifer will end up falling for each other and I hate series that do this. Just because they’re working together doesn’t mean they have to sleep together too! So annoying. But Chloe aside, this is worth watching for Tom Ellis alone. Wonderfully fun.
