Jen is desperate to get on a TV show, even though everyone is telling her that it's a bad idea. She just can't understand why they are being like this. She sends a spell out for a fake boyfriend to help her on the show but gets more than she bargained for when Nikolai shows up. With hexes, a necromancer, murder and a TV survival show to contend with, Jen and Nikolai will have to dig deep to survive this.

I am really liking the Keepers of the Veil series! Full of action, humour and sass, there is something here for everyone. The connection between Jen and Nikolai is simply steaming, although neither of them will admit to it being real. A wonderful addition to the series, and yet I am still wanting more! Definitely recommended.

First and foremost, if you think this is anything like the Arnie movie, think again! That movie only shares the title, a few names, and the idea of a game show with the book.

Written by Richard Bachman (aka Stephen King), this is set in a future dystopia where the gulf between the rich and the poor has widened even further, to the extent that, while the rich have access to new gadgets, medicine and groceries, life is a daily struggle to survive for the poor (who are now treated as vermin by the rich).

The top TV shows are all game shows (OK: like the movie); in all the poor are more-or-less tortured (the shows have names like 'Swimming with Crocidiles' or 'Treadmill to Fortune') to earn money. Of these, the most popular by far is 'The Running Man', which is - basically - a televised manhunt.

This is a pretty quick read - only took me about one day - with the Ben Richards of the novel far more sickly and wasted than the muscular Arnie of the film (Steve Buscemi, perhaps?), with the novel also covering a wider area of land than the Running Man set of that movie (which, remember, is only set in four zones - here, it's more-or-less right across America). The ending is also far more downbeat!

I want to play a game
A decent entry to the franchise after a long break from the last film. I like that it centres on one group of people doing several rounds of the "games" rather than lots of individuals. I wouldn't say it was scary but Saw has always been more about the gore and there is enough to keep fans happy. Those playing detective will have plenty of twists and red herrings to keep them entertained as well. Along with a familiar cast from various TV shows, the pieces come together to make a Saw film that's better than many of the later entries. Perfect for Halloween.

The best of the fantasy horror shows on TV!

Better special effects than True Blood, this show is the new and better Buffy, that uses actual folklore in adding to the creativity of the Supernatural created universe, unlike its predecessor who relied on created folklore to fill in plot holes. The later seasons have their ups and downs in terms of new humor and repetitiveness, but it is well worth the journey!

An episode to highlight would be when Sam and Dean face off against Famine, one of the four horses of the apocalypse.

Grab a canister of Morton Salt, a piece of pie and a blanket to snuggle in and enjoy the inside jokes!

One of the best shows on TV in recent years
An apocalyptic drama that finally ticks all the right boxes. The 'zombies' (walkers, lamebrains, whatever you want to call them) are realistically frightening (not either dragging their heels or moving at super-human speed), already achieving what so many in the genre fail to do - a terror we can actually relate to. Enhanced further by (generally) realistic post-apocalyptic situations and dilemmas, the drama is able to develop characters with ferocious intensity.

This show keeps me on the edge of my seat and has me genuinely invested in its key players. There's nothing out there quite like it - it's a uniquely brilliant experience.
