Music was full of fury, confusion and resistance in our first post-election year. Albums came with titles like American Dream (LCD Soundsystem), American Teen (Khalid) and All American Made (Margo Price).

But music in 2017 was also about a more slippery sense of self, as genre lines fall away and artists searched for identity and purpose in weird times.

So here's the best of a tumultuous year:

Taylor Swift clapped back, Kendrick Lamar went back to basics, Lorde threw a high-concept party and more:

I loved the dynamics of this book but what I loved even more is how sarcastic Isis can be and though I know it is a coping mechanism for her due to her past, the quirkiness of it endeared me to her. The plot is cleverly written and I loved the characters as you can easily relate to them.

Feel-good teen comedy
This is a feel-good cheesey movie from the 90s and one I've seen countless times! It's funny, easy to watch and just plain cute! The cast all are excellent, especially the young JGL, and the story itself is based off a Shakespeare play!! It's fun, simple and great to watch if you want to relax. Would definitely recommend!

Young adult novel about a teen who moves to a small town in Washington and falls in love with a vampire... I enjoyed it (and this isn't my normal reading fare), but couldn't past the terrible writing, lack of character development, and clunky passages that just made me cringe. If it had been better developed and written, it would have been a total winner, because it still had me spellbound.

Warning: Book involves a highly inappropriate relationship between a developmentally disabled young man (who is effectively a young teen, and likely will be for the rest of his life) and a grown woman.

The squick factor got in the way of me enjoying the book as much as I usually do with Bishop. It was nice to encounter less-powerful people who aren't all gorgeous.

Honestlys not sure how I feel about this one. There were glaring elements I hated (the narrating attitude about women and race especially), but things that I think are worth looking at like child “marriage” in the US and calling a girl who’d been raped repeatedly as a pre teen a “whore.” It’s a solid and deserved slap in the face for anyone inclined to idealize the period.

I am such a softy at heart
If your thing is sickly sweet, predictable love stories then this is for you! As it happens, I love a good love story. The chemistry between the actors is brill, I also loved how it's shot when they are texting eachother (if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean).

I received a copy of Soul of the Sword from Harlequin TEEN (US Canada) through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was superb. It has everything! Ghosts, demons, and forbidden romance.
I really enjoyed the mythology and the characters.
It's the second book in the series but I had no problem following what was going on.
I am Really looking forward to the third book!

I received a copy of Dear Haiti, Love Alaine from Harlequin TEEN (US Canada) through Netgalley.

I seriously love Alaine. I'd love to read more about her.

The story is told through school reports, news, articles and text messages and is a bit jarring at first but the storytelling makes up for it.

It's got family secrets and a curse and a witty protagonist that made me want to cheer.

The raw honesty with which she talks about living after a miscarriage, being stalked and other sexual assault (0 more)
I feel a lack of depth when she talks about her family life. She talks about not being upper class, yet she went to private boarding school, has famous parents and hung out on movie sets as a teen... (0 more)
Lily Allen is raw and down to earth in this autobiography
