This was such a great book! I wasn't sure what to expect...some chic lit, sugary sweet book or what. But let me tell you, it is NOT that all! Was it feel good? Yes, but it was all also very raw, emotional, & unexpected.
It tells the story of Ethan and Andi who meet through an on-line dating service and eventally marry. Ethan is a divorcee with 2 girls, the oldest of whom, Emily, resents Andi's presence in their lives from day 1. The book tells the story of Andi's fertility troubles, the marriage, interaction with her step-daughters, and their day to day lives.
Eventually the toxic environment that Emily creates & Ethan's enabling of her, leads to the downfall of the marriage...almost. But then, Emily gets pregnant. That's where the real action begins. I don't want to say much more for fear of giving away too much of the plot. I can say that this book has all the hallmarks I look for in a great read...romance, drama, deep characters, believability, etc.

Intriguing Agatha Christie Adaptation

I was very excited to watch the most recent adaptation of Agatha Christie's Poirot and for very good reason. It was a very well-rounded film filled with humour, intrigue, and devastation. I particularly loved the surprise plot twists so the audience can never really tell (unless extremely clever) who the culprit actually is until revealed by Hercules Poirot himself. The camera angles used were absolutely brilliant and refreshing. The all-star cast was a plus as it was nice to see familiar faces in unexpected roles. The acting, costumes, writing, and set all contributed to making the film have that true Agatha Christie feeling to it. On the downside, I was not a huge fan of Poirot's moustache and found it to be over-the-top and irritating. I also find myself leaning more towards David Suchet's version of Poirot than Kenneth Brannagh's. But, overall, this film was extremely entertaining and had my brain doing somersaults trying to figure out who the culprit was.

In the early-00s (well, 2001 - 2011), there was a TV show called 'Smallville' aka - and unofficially - also known as 'Superman: The Teenage Years', in which a large part of the early runs were to do with Clark Kent discovering his powers.

Now, take the same basic idea - that of an alien developing powers on Earth, and change it slightly so that there's nine of them, all teenagers growing up seperately, all refugees from a planet that has itself been invaded/destroyed by *other* aliens and most with their own flesh-and-blood protector with them, and you more or less have the plot for this.

I'd seen the movie a while back and, while it wasn't great, I still thought I would give the source material a shot.

It's not great either.

I don't know whether it the insipid romance between the central characters of John and Sarah, the clunky dialogue or the fact that the writer seems to follow a 'tell, don't show' method of writing (instead of the opposite), but this just did not do it for me at all :-(
