"Agnès Varda is one of the filmmakers I’ve always admired for her great ability to stick to her own voice. I find that irony is something that needs to be cultivated, and the few filmmakers who manage to do that are, for me, great masters. Even when she’s telling stories that are far from her own life, all of her films become like beads in a necklace that shines very brightly and decorates her. And the thing that I find surprising is that when she does tell stories that are so connected to her own gaze and her own life, they still succeed in being universal."

Although Suen writes very nicely, I think she needs to work on the old "show, don't tell" part of her writing. Her protagonist Conner seems like a nice enough person, but overall, he's pretty bland, and I really felt that there were things that didn't fit well. Grief is a powerful emotion, and I felt that while reading this, that Suen held back and didn't let all of the emotions into the character or the story. Plus, there's a twist in the end that simply doesn't make sense. This could be a really lovely book, but I'm afraid it fell short for me. Sorry!

There's a new wealthy family at "The Gardens," a gated New York community - the Golden family. Not only do they all have strange names (straight out of ancient Roman and Greek history and mythology), but they themselves seem a bit odd. René is a fellow resident, with ambitions in filmmaking, including a project to document the Golden family, but René hasn't decided if he can tell their true story or make up something fictional based on the Goldens; either way, René can't stay away from the Golden House. You can read more about this new Salman Rushdie novel here.
