Greg Norvick (23 KP) rated Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) in Movies
May 1, 2021
Wonder woman 84 has sequeitis basically the first one was great we have to pump the other one fast. Patti Jenkins (hopefully I spelled it right) just was like I know what I'm doing also getting limited production with covid didn't help. I felt like steve would just come back not in someone else body would work because they did dangerous stuff and they didn't think twice or acknowledge that he really shouldn't do that. Also not rally acknowledge it I didn't think he was inhabiting another body till the end also kristen wiig's character was such a change to evil. It didn't feel like a villain for Diana, also it seems she does that character slot overall great character growth on Diana. Cheetah look could be better. It's ok

Lyrical look at America's racialised society
James Baldwin was truly an inspirational artist and author in American history. He puts forward very bluntly the issues that the country faces in terms of it's attitude towards black bodies as the body is political. It's rather depressing that after 50 years the US still has not addressed these issues. It's a haunting and poetic documentary. His line about how black people are 'castrated' throughout the country just in different ways is deeply honest and deeply disturbing.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2357 KP) rated How to Survive a Killer Séance (Party Planning, #3) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Event planner Presley Parker is hired for a seance themed party at the Winchester Mystery House. But part way through, the "ghost" goes off script. Next thing she knows, the host is missing and a body has turned up. I really like the characters, but plot could have used a bit more polish. It dragged in a few places, and the ending felt rushed.

Melanie Caldicott (6 KP) rated Grace Williams Says It Loud in Books
Apr 29, 2021
I thought this book was really cleverly written. It is a challenging read - challenging because it looks things in the eye which most of us shy away from. It breaks down preconceived ideas, prejudice and assumptions.
It is grim at times, sad, heartbreaking but ultimately uplifting. I thought the characterisation was amazing. The narrative style skillfully portrays a clever woman trapped inside the body of somebody who has limited ability to communicate.
The love story was movingly beautiful but gritty and not over sentimental.
Fabulous debut!

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2357 KP) rated The Penguin Who Knew Too Much (Meg Langslow, #8) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Meg and Michael are finally ready to move into their new house. Unfortunately, Meg's dad finds a dead body while digging a pool for the penguins. Wait a minute. Penguins? Yep, it's another mad cap romp with Meg and her family. I found the book very funny and laughed the entire way through. Unfortunately, the ending was a tad weak for my tastes. But that was the only flaw in the book.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2357 KP) rated Not a Girl Detective (A Cece Caruso Mystery, #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Cece is speaking to a Nancy Drew collectors meeting about Carolyn Keene and the authors who really wrote under that name. However, between a rash of vandalism and a dead body, she's found herself in a mystery that would make the teen detective proud. I found some of the collectors over the top and the pacing a little off, but on the whole I still enjoyed this book.
