Freddie’s First Case Gets off to an Uneven Start

Freddie Archer is a columnist for Gotham Magazine focusing on fashion and gossip, but when she mentions someone in her column that turns up murdered, the police ask for her help in identifying the victim’s companion. Not content to just observe and report back, Freddie soon finds herself getting in over her head, especially as the body count starts to rise. Can she identify the culprit?

I’ve enjoyed some of the author’s other books, but this one was very uneven. While Freddie’s world of 1925 New York City came alive early on, it really slowed down the plot to the point I was getting annoyed by Freddie and the name dropping of famous people in the book. Once the story really took off, it got better. I grew to like Freddie, and I enjoyed seeing her famous friends. Still, there was a thread that just got dropped on the way to an otherwise logical climax. There’s a sheen of humor to the story that balances out the more serious moments. I’ll give this series another try, but hopefully, the next is overall stronger.

Murder is Dramatic

Verity Beresford seeks out Judith Potts when Verity’s husband, Oliver, never returned from the maiden voyage of the Marlow Belle. The boat had been rented by the Marlow Amateur Dramatic Society, which Oliver heads. But then Oliver’s body turns up, and Judith can’t help but wonder if Verity was trying to divert suspicion from herself by asking for help. Can Judith and her friends figure out what really happened?

While Judith is the main sleuth, Becks and Susie are still active and contribute a little toward the solution. Becks also gets a strong subplot, and I still laughed at the antics of all three characters. I wasn’t as big a fan at some of the comments that seem to be bashing men. The mystery kept me guessing with strong suspects, but I found the climax weaker than I would have liked. The plot gets Judith involved in the drama group’s latest play, which I enjoyed. And that ending makes me very glad the next in the series is due out in a couple of months. Fans will definitely be glad they picked this book up.

I'm a sucker for books that are set in my neck of the woods so when I heard of a new series set in the beautiful Lake District, I wasn't going to pass up the chance and I'm pleased I didn't because this is a great start to a new series and one I am looking forward to getting my teeth into.

There is plenty of atmosphere in this book and the excellent descriptions of the Lakes countryside only add to this. I really liked the characters and am keen to find out more about DI Chambers' back story and watching the developing friendship between her and Margot and between Chambers and her small team.

The mystery of who the killer was kept me guessing and there were enough twists to keep me returning. I liked the different points of view which helped to give a rounded picture from Chambers', Margot's and the killers point of view.

Overall, a really successful start to a series and one I am looking forward to reading the next.

Brisket and Deadly Tension

Sho Tanaka’s sister Jenny is entering a local barbecue competition, and Sho and Levi Blue are going along to show their support. Sho immediately notices all the tension between the other professional contestants. But he isn’t prepared when he and Levi stumble over a dead body. With the evidence pointing to Jenny, Sho is quick to jump into the investigation. Who is cooking up more than barbecue?

Quite often when I start a mystery, it’s easy to see who the victim will be. That wasn’t the case here, which is something I loved. I did feel the pacing was off in the first half, but I still enjoyed the book and was satisfied when we reached the end. I love these characters. They are strong with great relationships. While the book deals with some serious topics, like early onset dementia and prescription drug addiction, it is a comedic mystery, and I laughed quite a few times. The competing tones are balanced perfectly, making for a richer reading experience. It’s going to be a long wait for me until the next in the series comes out. If you haven’t started this series yet, fix that today.

Murder is Mushrooming

The community of Redwood Cove is getting ready for the annual mushroom festival. It includes a mushroom hunting contest that is bring out the worst in some of the residence. Kelly Jackson witnesses several fights, including between the people attending a mushroom class she is hosting at her bed and breakfast. However, she is still surprised when a dead body is found. As she and the Silver Sentinels, a group that works to solve problems in the community, start to investigate, they find motives beyond the mushroom festival. Can they figure out what is happening?

It was nice to get to reconnect with Kelly and her friends. They make a great group of characters, and I love seeing their relationships grow in this book. It was also interesting to watch the suspects evolve as the book progressed. The book managed to surprise me as to who the victim was going to be, something that doesn’t often happen. It kept me guessing on the killer until Kelly figured it out, too. If you are looking for a light cozy, this is the book for you.
