Booksnthreads (19 KP) rated Doctor Who: Time Lord Fairy Tales in Books
Jun 5, 2018
I love fairy tales, and I love Doctor Who, so this book was absolutely perfect. It's also a wonderful combination of retold familiar tales and original stories that are in the vein of fairy tales.
I found it fun that in most stories, I could clearly identify which Doctor was appearing in that story. I also appreciated that he is often not the main character.
It was so much fun to read that it was over far too quickly.

I loved this book, from the Doctor Who references to Spock becoming more human than he would've ever let himself. This book got me laughing and smiling so much, perhaps one of the top books to do so.

The 8th Doctor Adventures have been consistently solid, this is one of the true gems. A heist story on a train. What more could you want? Love the pacing of this adventure, it's just unbridled fun. For a full review, visit www.travelingthevortex.com.

Fabulous Russian tale about human ethics
What a fantastic satirical book. Think about crossing Frankenstein with My Fair Lady, and then setting it in Soviet Russia. This book is about how human beings are essentially more enslaved to systems than a dog is. A doctor decides to do a science experiment, putting the pituitary gland and testicles of a man into a stray dog to see the results. Instead they end up with a man wolf, who is rude and obnoxious, and demands the same rights as a human being. No sooner is he a man, he is forced to be registered and take part in rebuilding the nation after tsarist Russia. However, as a man he's still treated as a lowly pauper or a dog by the doctor. So who is more free - the dog having to raid bins to search for scraps or the one owned by the doctor and the government? Fabulous little tale.

Second entry in Simon Scarrow's now so-called 'Berlin wartime thriller series (after Blackout), again following Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke of the Kripo (criminal police) as he first investigates the murder (as the wife of the doctor believes) - or was it suicide? (been already ruled as such) - of a SS doctor, before being told in no uncertain terms to leave it alone.
He is then pulled into an investigation of a separate murder (again, is it such? The parents believe so, but the state does not) of a child which, as events transpire, seems to have more and more to do with the death of the SS doctor.
So I could see from roughly a third of the way into this where it was going. And it is horrifying that these events - well, maybe not *these* exact events, but very very similar ones - took place routinely in 1940 Nazi Germany.
Learn from history.
So it will never be repeated.

Vocs
I like this one it has everything that makes classic who group of people who are trapped with the doctor and his companion with an enemy who's killing them off one by one. The story takes alot of cues from Agatha Christie novels plenty of red herrings. And then there's the VOCs probably one of the best designed robots in who history. plus Tom baker in his element trying to convince the crew that it's the VOCs that are the real killers and not him or someone else is controlling them. Pure classic but not the last time that doctor who will use Christie for inspiration

Meh. Overlong, unneeded travelogue with the Doctor and Donna globetrotting all over the Earth... WITHOUT the TARDIS. Flying commercial airliners, just to have a plane crash scene, commuting by rail just to have a train crash scene. The main plot about evil aliens hiding within social media and feeding off negative emotions of posters (i.e. Nerd Rage) is topical, but doesn't fit Doctor Who. Not a particularly well told tale either, when I finally got to the climax it was more of a relief than a satisfactory ending. Was not impressed with this one at all.
