The Splits

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Imagine an eerie, parallel London living through a mysterious pandemic…

Two sisters escape a traumatic childhood to build perfect lives. Then one day Anna’s husband starts losing his mind. And Claire’s son becomes so volatile she’s frightened to be around him.

A terrifying disease known as ‘the splits’ lingers on the streets of the city. The science is definitive – the splits is quick, gruesome and fatal. There can be no link to what ails the men in Anna and Claire's families.

Except that nothing about this disease is what it seems. Evidence is emerging of a slow-burn variety, which infects its victims so stealthily it is invisible until the terrible end-stage.

A maverick researcher is touting a risky experimental cure. Anna rejects this as a dangerous fantasy.

But for Claire, it is her only chance to save her disintegrating boy.

What happens next changes the sisters' lives forever, as they fight themselves and each other for one last shot at happiness.

This was totally different to your average zombie infection read. I really enjoyed it. The characters and their lives were so interesting and it was definitely a different take on what makes a “zombie”. Very clever writing.

Straight away we see a young teen running for her life through the woods. A hooded stranger captures her, ties her up and buries her alive. She manages to escape but is grabbed again........ By a doctor at a hospital and strapped to the bed. It turns out this girl has schizophrenia and everything that just happened was inside her head and these visions are due to her not taking her medication.

She soon returns from hospital, back on her meds and a return to normal life, or at least as normal as life can be for her. About half an hour in, we finally get to the plot line of the movie where Rain is adament there's a kidnapped child in the attic of her neighbours house, but nobody believes her when she tells them including her therapist, so she sets out to find the truth for herself.
This movie had me gripped from the start and it went at a nice pace, everyone involved did a fantastic job at bringing the characters to life, so much so that you even start to question what's real and the huge twist at the end I was not expecting at all.

The House of Fallen Sisters is a fast paced historical mystery - and a firm 10/10 from me!
I’ve loved all of Louise Hare’s books, and she’s fast becoming an insta-read author for me. Every book has been distinctly different from her others. Books have been set in: 1950’s London, 1930’s London and Harlem, and now this book is set in the brothels of 1760’s London (London seems to be a key place in all of her books so far - and that’s OK with me!).

In trying to escape her inevitable life as a prostitute in a Covent Garden brothel, Sukey finds a young black man in a side street, almost beaten to death. Whilst trying to save him, she’s captured and returned to the brothel. There’s a lot going on in the underbelly (and brothels) of London: slavery, double dealing, and cheating those who think they’re a friend.

I really enjoyed this - I got a real sense of the hustle and bustle of London. The danger, the community, friendships, hardships and the rules of the game Sukey and her Fallen Sisters must adhere to. They’re all fabulous characters - even the more untrustworthy people!

I can’t wait to see where Louise Hare takes us next!
