Good but not what you'd expect
I started this book expecting it to be very fantasy-esque and magical, and the first part fitted this completely. It was full of promise and intrigue about bindings and kept me completely hooked. It then moves onto the second part and goes into a totally different direction than the magical one I'd expected.

This isn't a bad thing, it was just a complete surprise. I can't really say what the story changes into without spoiling it, but it was still very interesting to read. It's very well written and despite not being the story I had been expecting, the well developed and engaging characters and the writing style more than make up for it. The ending too is very satisfying. The only criticisms I have is that it may be slightly too long and I do wish it had been a bit more magical. This book gives a glimpse into a great story and idea, but I do wish there had been a little more to this side.

I thought the story in general of The Favorite Sister had lots of promise! But it was just too much all over the place. Telling us Brett was dead in the beginning did nothing for me. It would have been a better shocker at the end to know that Stephanie had died, and Brett a surprise death. It just wasn't necessary to do all the back and for now and then. It made the book confusing, it was hard to keep track of where we were in the story and also who's story we were following. I didn't know who was talking, since they were all just really vain horrible people, their voices all seemed similar. This made it difficult to relate or identify with any character, let alone like them or keep track of them! I found that even in Luckiest Girl Alive, I had trouble even liking ONE character. I liked Brett at first, but then slowly hated her towards the end. Maybe just throw in ONE likeable character in your books! Just throw us a bone!

Unusual and left you wanting more
This author is truly amazing. She is able to take well know tales/ folk lores and turn them into gripping novels. This book is no different. I found this enchanting tale after reading her Chronicles of Alice series of books.
She has taken the story of Bo Burnham and the little mermaid and amalgamated them into what is an amazing read.
In short the story is about a mermaid who wants to see the world. She is taken in by Burnham with a promise of money to show the world her mermaid tricks. Safe to say that like all of Christina Henry's other books it takes a dark and twisted turn however seems to work out well in the end.
There are definitely some moments in the book where i was worried to read on as i thought something really bad was going to happen.
It kept me on the edge of my seat through out and was a wonderful tale of the darkness of men and magic.
