"This was what my sister was listening to in her room and when I heard it there was a defining moment. We all have these pivotal moments where there’s a sense of clarity where we can recall what we were seeing at the time, we can remember what things smelled like and their color and I remember walking through the hallway of our house and hearing ‘Heartbreaker’ coming out of her room and the world stopped. I was stunned because it struck such a nerve and had so much energy. Then when the solo came on I discovered another dimension of music. I was probably ten or eleven. I hadn’t picked up a guitar by this point but that’s when I knew I had to play. I had seen guitars since I was in kindergarten and was obsessed by finding photos of guitars but after hearing Led Zeppelin II I crossed the line between just liking guitars and wishing I could play one, to saying, ‘Ok, I’m going to play…’"

Nine years. That's how long Richard and Mildred Loving had to fight just to live together as husband and wife in the state of Virginia, their case traveling all the way to the Supreme Court. Ms. Powell recounts their travails in alternating pages, in spare but beautiful verse that makes you feel as if this couple, who were really quite ordinary but lived in a time when what we see as such today would have been extraordinary . . . or illegal, are right in the room with you, telling you their story.

Rare gem
The movie revolves around one hotel room over the case of several decades, from its inaugural tenants, to a chilling scenario on New Year's Eve of the new millennium. A masterpiece from Canada which is a rare find but totally worth it.

"Well, it’s hard to say which Virginia Woolf I would choose since she is of all writers the one who most clearly articulates the world as I live in and perceive it. But I think I would say that the particular sadness of Jacob’s Room somehow reminds me of myself when life has taken me away from myself. “Their lack of concern for him was not the cause of his gloom, but some more profound conviction—it was not that he himself was lonely, but that all people are.”"

One of the most life-changing books I've read
George Orwell's terrifying dystopian novel is one of those books that has gone down as the all-time top 100 books to read. It explores the idea of "double-think" not too dissimilar to what we currently call the "Post-Truth" era. Written in 1948, Orwell envisioned a world ruled by the Soviet Union in which all information was distorted and monitored to the point that thoughts were also exposed. It is terrifying beyond belief, as the main character Winston Smith attempts to explore his own mind not before facing the infamous Room 101. A really important read for our time.
