This is what I would call a slow burn - it never really ignites fully and sometimes fizzles to the point it almost goes out but, generally, it just stays at a solid gas mark 3 for the most part.

Seven members of a nature group come together for a Boxing Day gathering to watch a murmuration within a nature reserve. Seems like a fairly innocuous and harmless way to spend a day and evening usually spent eating leftovers and vegging in front of the television and it is, until a shot rings out and one of their party is dead.

Each of the remaining six have secrets they don't want made common knowledge and therefore each have a motive for murder. None of the characters have many redeeming features if I'm honest and it wouldn't have made any difference to me who was the victim as I didn't particularly like any of them.

What follows is infighting which results in the group splitting up (never a good idea - have they never watched a horror film!) and suspicions falling on one person, then another, then another ... well, you get the idea. More shots are heard, people are separated further, injuries happen, more separation and more infighting and, all the while, the secrets they want to stay hidden gradually come to light.

What I enjoyed about this book was the sense of claustrophobia and isolation that was well captured and, as seems to be the norm with Nell's books, the inclusion of a character who is deaf added something a bit different.

What I didn't like about it was there was too much time spent describing stuff that didn't really seem to add to the story and this resulted in it dragging - hence the slow burn.

I have read a few of Nell's other books and this does seem to be a pattern with her stories but there have been plenty of people who have absolutely raved about this book so please, please don't judge it from my review alone.

Remember, if we all liked the same things, it would be a very, very boring world indeed!

You know full well I'll be watching all the movies in the -Headed Shark Attack series!

When a boatful of students is attacked at sea they must get to the safety of a nearby atoll while crew remain on board to make repairs. As they explore their new surroundings the danger becomes even more real when the shark starts to pick them off one by one.

In my shark appreciation post (on my website) I listed off a lot of plus points to amusingly entertaining shark films and this has a lot of them. Science, geography, everything you learnt at school is wrong... if you use this film as a reference.

We start with the inexplicable "semester at sea" storyline...

"We could have them doing a day trip out to study marine life, a science field trip."
"That's not long enough, make it a whole semester at sea."
"Okay, but we don't have the budget for technically accurate sets with equipment for people studying the ocean to that level."
"They just need a boat."
"I mean, I've never studied the ocean but I imagine they'd have sonar and lots of diving gear..."
"Just give them a boat!
"Okay, I'll get the writers to give the boat an experienced crew and..."
"No, no, no! Why would they need that?"
"Because they're going to sea on an expedition..."
"Give them minimal crew, no common sense and make the most useful members of the crew not speak the same language as the majority of the others."
*blank stare*

See what I mean? Shark film gold! There are so many ridiculous things that I lost count.

From the completely logical inclusion of a scene where Carmen Electra sunbathes in a bikini in the middle of a crisis to some obligatory boobs, the human section of the cast are all playing their stereotypes well. The acting is fairly good for this sort of film, it's surprisingly convincing... occasionally.

The shark contingent has mystical control over the world around it. You know when you're driving and you inhale to get through tight gaps? I believe the shark harnesses that same magic to get into the shallow water.

2-Headed Shark Attack does everything I love in a shark film and it has that star quality that's needed (someone you know and someone who looks familiar and you have to IMDb them), I would happily watch it again, probably in a marathon with 3-, 5- and 6-Headed Shark Attack... but every time I write that down I worry about where 4- went.

PRINCE OF FLOWERS is the first book in the Wild Hearts series and we are introduced to a world that is both contemporary and magical. It was a little weird to start with when Playstations are being discussed but it soon turned to the magical side, and all was right for me.

I say for me because it certainly wasn't for Sylvain. Locke is a summoner, a super senior summoner as he has been at Wispwood for years. His father was a big name and it's a lot for him to live up to but, to be honest, it didn't sound as though he was that bothered about doing the work either. Yes, he wants his Summoner's Crest but the only reason that is mentioned is so he can get his hands on his inheritance.

He summons Sylvain and can't understand why Sylvain is a bit perturbed. Sylvain, quite rightly, wants to know what's going on and why. The "Humanoids" have been summoned in the past, but it isn't common," line didn't sit that well with me. It didn't seem quite right. Maybe that's just me.

The spark is there between the two of them from the start - although whether it is attraction or being contrary to each other is up to you to figure out. I did enjoy how they worked things out and ended up working together.

I really did enjoy this book and certainly want to continue with the series. I am hopeful that in subsequent books we will get more world- and character-building than we got here. Although there was some, it just didn't feel as though it was enough. I want to know more about the magical side, about Locke's relationship with his father, about where his father went, about Evander Skink, so much more!

All in all, this was a great read and a brilliant start to a new series. Individual and quirky, I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Smolder is the first book in the Underground Encounters series, and we start off this new series with a blast - quite literally! Nike, and her best friend Maya, are the only two firefighters where they work, and they both like 'alternative' music. So whenever they get some time off, they go to Vamps, the best 'alternative' club. Nike is a very shy person, which is often mistaken for her being bitchy. So when she sees the man she has been lusting after from the local rock-climbing club at Vamps, she stumbles over her words. Things move quickly between them, and the story really kicks in.

This is a fast-paced novella, and that really is my only complaint about this book! I would have loved to have known more. I loved Nike, and her common-sense, no-nonsense, approach to something that she seriously wasn't expecting. Michel is a perfect partner for her, a case of opposites attracting. With attraction, danger, lust, and supernaturals, this book was very well written, drawing the reader into the world without any trouble. There were no editing or grammatical errors that I noticed, and I thoroughly enjoyed this first novella. Looking forward to the next book in this series. Definitely recommended by me.

"I could easily talk for several hours just about this. It was particularly this piece called 'It's Gonna Rain' that I heard with my friend Peter Schmidt, the painter. I'd met Peter while I was at art college and he was a very, very distinctive and unusual character. He was a German Jew who'd come over to England in the '30s and was a very good poker player because it was impossible to know what he was thinking. He was a very inscrutable person. Most people found it very hard to be with him as you'd say something to him and he'd just look at you. But I liked him a lot and we got on very well, and it turned out we'd been thinking about a lot of similar things. One of the things we used to do was sit around at his place in Stockwell and explore new music. Generally it was he who would play things to me and one day he said, ""Have you heard this?"" and my life changed. Reich recorded this in '65, so that's 51 years old and fucking hell, what have we been doing for half a century? The first thing that happens when you're listening to that is that the repetitive element of it gradually makes you start to lose focus of the pieces that keep repeating. You start hearing the little differences. It's a little bit like the way a frog's eye works. It doesn't scan like ours do, it stays fixed on a scene and very quickly the rods and cones get saturated with everything that doesn't move. So as soon as something does move, like a fly, that's the only thing that the frog sees. I think the ears behave like that when they're presented with something highly repetitive like this. Your ears quickly saturate or habituate with the common stuff and they start to pick up details. I remember the first time I heard 'It's Gonna Rain', I started to zone in on the pigeons, because this was out in the street, it was a recording of a street preacher so you can hear cars and horns and then you start to hear these birds but only after a while, after the other stuff has cleared out of your consciousness. That's amazing because what was making the music was my brain and that was the first time I'd realised that, as a composer, you could co-opt a listener's brain. So suddenly, wow, that's another 100 per cent of the universe opening up. When you put something out into the world that is kind of incomplete and it takes your consciousness and the errors of your perceptual mechanism to actually make it into something, that totally changed my idea of what music could be. The actual amount of material used is tiny, the loop of ""it's gonna rain"" is not even a second, and that's the only element used in that section. You think, bloody hell, that's economy, and I've always loved economy. At the time I first heard this we were in a period of maximum indulgence in pop music. Sixteen-track recorders had just appeared so suddenly so many people were just putting so much shit onto everything just because you could. Every spice in the cupboard. Suddenly I heard this and it was so stark and effective. The other thing about it is that within it is a mechanism that I've subsequently used a lot, which is the idea of having things running out of sync with each other. Again, your whole experience of music until then had been to do with synchronisation. Everything sticks together and then at this point everything changes together. What happens in this piece is that you get the same cycle but running so that on each repetition they're in a slightly different place in relation to each other. So you have an automatic generator of variety and I use that on so much of my work. That became my go-to technique for making something interesting straight away."
