When Megan Sawyer sees a woman stranded during a winter storm, she offers her a ride to town. The woman is Becca, who is coming to Winsome to spend the upcoming Christmas holiday with her aunt. However, when she goes to drop off Becca, Megan witnesses a confrontation between Becca and her very estranged father, Paul. When Paul dies a few days later, Becca quickly becomes the chief suspect. But Megan thinks there is more to his death, especially since it mirrors an unusual death in one of Megan’s aunt Sarah’s books. Is the killer using the book to send a message?

The Christmas setting is in contrast to the plot of this book. In fact, it makes it seem darker as a result. This is a plot that will stay with you for a while after you are done. Little things that appear to mean nothing come into clearer focus when we reach the climax of the tightly plotted story. I enjoyed seeing the returning characters again, but the new characters really steal the show. They are very strong, even Paul, which is unusual for a murder victim.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book.

Sweetly Festive Debut
Identical twins Alex and Hanna have made a life for themselves in a small Montana town, where they have opened Murder and Mayhem, a combination mystery bookstore and chocolate shop. In the time they’ve been here, Alex has become friends with Jane, one of their neighbors. Jane invites Alex over to view a true crime show because she believes that one of their neighbors is the killer still at large at the end of the episode. But when Alex arrives, she finds Jane’s dead body. The police think it was a robbery gone wrong, but Alex wonders if Jane was really onto something. Can she find the killer?

Between the culinary cozy theme and the Christmas setting, I have to give this debut a chance. I’m glad I did. The first couple of chapters had a bit too much background on Alex and Hanna, but once the murder happened, things picked up. I appreciated how the clues were folded into the story. Not that I figured out the killer using them. The characters are good, but they could be a little stronger. Likewise, the setting is good, but could be a little stronger. Both of these are minor complaints since I am definitely ready to visit my new friends and this location again soon. I enjoyed the Christmas timing as well. This is a delicious debut.

"I'm On My Fucking Lunch Break!"
A crook poses as a mall Santa over the holidays to pull off a quick score.

Acting: 10
Billy Bob Thornton is, dare I say, brilliant in his role as Willie Stokes. His rage alone makes for a number of hilarious moments throughout the movie. In one of my favorite scenes, a kid walks up to him in the food court because he is still in his Santa pants. After the kid continues to pester him, Willie finally screams, “I’m on my fucking lunch break!” as pieces of food fly out of his mouth. It is still to this day one of the most memorably hilarious scenes I’ve ever seen.

Beginning: 10

Characters: 10
Just like Willie, Bad Santa features a bunch of broken characters that are messed up and dysfunctional. They are the reason this movie works as its fun watching everyone walk around so screwed up. Screwed up people have a tendency to leave a mark on scenes and this movie is no exception. Some of my favorite scenes involve the senile Grandma played by Cloris Leachman. Like most of these characters. You really just don’t know what to expect from her.

Cinematography/Visuals: 8

Conflict: 10

Entertainment Value: 9
This category fell short of a perfect score for me due to the fact that, while I think it’s absolutely hysterical, I also understand that this is a specific type of humor that may not cater to everyone. Speaking for myself, it had me in stitches. It is one of those comedies that’s just hard to forget.

Memorability: 10

Pace: 6

Plot: 10
I will admit, the story is a bit of a stretch in certain spots, but otherwise very creative. Its originality allows me to say that I have seen anything like it before it or since. The best part is though it follows the story of an alcoholic crook, it manages to somehow still stay within the spirit of Christmas.

Resolution: 10

Overall: 93
If you’re not watching Bad Santa during the holidays, you’re doing something wrong. It’s about as ridiculous as a softcore porn movie, but if we’re being honest, aren’t most Christmas movies? Ah, Christmas and porn. Yup, that just happened.

App doesn't work with smile.amazon for charity
Almost TOO easy!
Amazon has made shopping from your couch almost TOO simple! I have created "wish lists" for things I want to buy my son for Christmas. Amazon is wonderful about marking price drops and I have gotten some wonderful deals this way. I love that I have access to a wide range of products from around the world and customer reviews for those products. With my Prime membership I have the option for free 2 day shipping, but more frequently I choose the "no rush" shipping option. This takes a little longer but I receive credits for digital items such as Kindle books, music, and movie rentals.
This app doesn't work with the smile.amazon charity donations. This is the one drawback of the app, and it IS a big one for me.

Before watching this film, I thought it was a spin-off to the Bad Mom's film series, I did not realise it is actually the sequel to the original film. I was a bit dubious as to how this movie would entertain, as most sequels tend to be worse than the original. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas version as it bested the first film. In my opinion, the comedy was top-notch (no surprise considering the immense cast). I would definitely recommend this film, though please take note of the age certification - it is 15 for a reason! I don't think you need to have seen the first film in order to watch this sequel. I couldn't remember the content first film despite remembering watching it at the cinema with my mum. There's only one small scene which ties the first film into it but you get the gist of what happened.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance audio copy

I love Toff and I love fake dating and I love Christmas so really this should have been right up my street. I'm going to chock my thoughts on this book up to me not being in the right headspace to pick it up. I put it off a little waiting for the wintery season and when it finally came time I just wasn't in the mood so that definitely coloured my perception a little. I actually ended up quite enjoying this by the end but it was a slow starter for me. I love that Toff decided to narrate the audiobook herself but I didn't particularly enjoy her narration (again this spawns from my previous reads leaving so much to be desired and not being in quite the right headspace). All in all not a bad read but not a particularly great one either.

"I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen Dumb and Dumber. It’s got to be at least 50. I remember in college, I watched this movie with my buddies and we just thought it was the funniest f—ing thing we’ve ever seen. I still watch it and I still quote it all the time. In fact, I [went] on Ellen as Lloyd Christmas for Halloween… You know what it is about it? There are so many moments in this movie that are ridiculous; they’re dumb — that’s why the movie is called Dumb and Dumber — but I’ve thought about this. Why is it that I love this movie so much? I think it’s because Lloyd and Harry really cared about each other. There was real heart to that movie… and if you don’t have that in these movies and it’s just pure broad comedy, it’s missing something that you can connect to."

Erika (17789 KP) rated Hustlers (2019) in Movies

I had zero expectations going into this film. First, I had watched a 20/20 episode on the real life strippers that this was based on, and basically, the movie took the concept and made it a sort of BFF film. The people Ramona and Destiny's characters are based upon were definitely not friends.
This movie was drawn out and boring. It was a LONG hour and 49 minutes. A lot of the scenes were unnecessary, and would not stop going. I thought the Christmas scene would never end.
Something was off about Constance Wu, she was very wooden and again, boring. Also, while Cardi B and Lizzo appear in the film, they're more like cameos, which is a shame. The Usher scene, while unnecessary, was one of the best in the film. Usher looks the same as he did back then, and it's super creepy.
I'm not sure why this had all the buzz at TIFF.
