2014 was a damn fine year for Marvel Studios in terms of quality, their two outputs being The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. They're just a big double-whammy example of how comic book movies can get things right.
GOTG was a very niche property before hand. A bunch of little know Marvel characters galavanting around space, with revolving line ups involving inconsistent degrees of absurdity. The fact that batshit crazy characters such as Groot and Rocket Raccoon are now household names is an indication of just how effective this movie was.
James Gunn proves that he is the man for the job by melding together his own signature style (alongside his regular collaborator Michael Rooker of course) with the tried and tested Marvel formula of big action, and frequent humour. It's a toss up between this and Thor Ragnarok for funniest MCU movie for sure. Nearly every joke lands well, and unlike the sequel, the humour is never overdone. The balance is near perfect.
The cast are mainly to thank for that of course. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and the voice talents of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel make up the titular Guardians, and they are all unique and have intriguing back stories. They are well developed as the film plays out, and together make for an irreplaceable band of misfits.
The supporting cast include the aformentioned Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, John C. Reilly, Lee Pace, Glenn Close, Peter Serafinowicz, Sean Gunn, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio Del Toro, and a first appearance by Josh Brolin as Thanos... It's another undeniably impressive ensemble cast for the MCU.
The special effects on display here are incredible. The whole film looks amazing and the big set pieces are hugely entertaining, and emotionally charged...These characters make a quick impression!
The only real criticism I have is that Ronan the Accuser, this films main antagonist, feels a little wasted. He looks great, and Lee Pace does the best with what he's given, but by the time the credits roll, he unfortunately joins the big pile of disposable MCU villains.
It's a small gripe when compared to all the good in this movie - that includes it's fantastic soundtrack by the way.

Nico messes up so bad!
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book 2 in the Chesapeake Days series, but it can totally be read as a stand alone to book 1. Linc and Nate do pop up, but you don't need their story for this one to make sense. BUT! It was a bloody good read, and Nico is Linc's best friend.
After a less then stella first meeting, Nico and Hudson are at loggerheads. But being forced to collaborate on an event that will benefit both their businesses AND the town, they actually get to know each other and those snipes and barbs become less sharp and more flirty. Nico doesn't want a boyfriend, but that's all Hudson wants.
This is a proper enemies to lovers book and I loved it!
In book 1, this two, whenever they meet, have nasty comments to make to each other, but what I loved about this is, as they got to know each other, the meaning behind the barbs changed, and they become flirty, and it isn't too long before they realise they could be good for each other.
But they both carry some baggage: Nico's fear of relationships and falling in love (but that makes sense, once you get his whole story) and Hudson dealing with his male parental unit (you'll see why I do not want to call him a father) and things spiral for both of them.
Hudson messes up more than Nico, which surprised me, though. But when Nick DOES mess up, tis a doozy!
It's smexy and steamy, emotional and funny, and everything in between!
Both Nico and Hudson have a say, so we get it all. We get just how much Nico loves it when Hudson teases him. We get just when Hudson starts to see when Nico is much more than the business man he portrays. And while we have to wait far too bloody long, we do get an I love you!! Far too long I had to wait and I wasn't sure whether I would! So well played for keeping me on my toes, Ms McIntyre, well played.
So Jer, Nico's friend, still needs a story, but now I see Taran, Nico's brother, needs one cos something happened here that set all sorts of alarms off for me!
But I'm really not too fussed who's next, cos I'll read it, regardless!

For gods sake this woman knows how to kick you in the guts with trauma! This has so many trigger warnings. This book makes you feel everything itâs quite graphic and she doesnât hold back! Whether you like this series or not the woman writes abuse better than anyone Iâve read she gets you feeling all the emotions. I still canât stand these men but there is a catalyst for each one of them that being the worlds worst parents they certainly didnât do their kids any good. One thing I love is these women are strong and ruling the world is on the agenda!

Finally! Finally, we get to see the ending of Hunter and Brighid's story! DREAM WEAVER is the second story in the Mystic Beach series that has Brighid and Hunter as the main characters. Now, I need to say, there wasn't actually a long wait for this book but, being as I wanted to find out what happened as soon as I'd finished book one, it has felt like an age!
Hunter is back in Brighid's life, determined to put all his past wrongs right with her - still as his best friend though. By this time, Brighid is happy to get what she can. Life has a way of happening though, and things definitely don't go smoothly.
One thing that bugged me is Hunter's reaction to Holly's ultimatum. Gah! I wanted to slap him upside the head! He knows Marina is on his side, and he knows Billy will do whatever he can to help, but does he speak to them? No! He falls for the old 'if you tell anyone, I will know' routine. And a blind man could see that Holly would release the video at some point because that's just who she is.
Anyway, moving on LOL. I loved how assumptions Hunter had made about how his bandmates saw Brighid were shot out of the water. In fact, that whole part with him seeing the restrictions he'd placed on them both was brilliantly written. I liked how Brighid turned it around when she was with her circle, to get an honest opinion from them. I understood her reaction but felt as though she'd taken a bit much on her shoulders as her responsibility. How other people speak/act/feel isn't all down to you, but then, I've had this conversation recently with my hubby so that may have bled over into this!
I loved their story and thought the ending was perfect for them. Hunter's tattoo sounds gorgeous and I'm so happy they have finally worked it through. Now I have to wait (im) patiently for the next one. Ah, Ms. Archer, what have you done to me? You've got me hooked on #RockstarRomance when I don't even like it that much! Highly recommended by me.

More tense, gripping crime set in Edinburgh

The 5th book in the increasingly badly titled "DI Luc Callanach" series (he is hardly in this one!) follows much the same template as the other 4 books. A body is found in mysterious circumstances, here it is the body of a young man who appears to have thrown himself from the top of a tower in East Lothian. Soon thereafter, other bodies start to turn up, all looking like suicides or are people who had previously tried to commit suicide. At the same time, another body turns up, this time with a personal connection to one DI Callanach. So again we have the two investigations running in parallel. Though because of the apparent connection, the eponymous DI Callanach is taken off active duty and is largely absent for the second half of the book.
The main investigation is interesting: someone taking against those who do not value their life and have tried to end it in the past, and he decides to end it for them. However, there is a twist along the way that just did not feel right. For this murderer to suddenly become a Red Dragon-style character was somewhat at odds with the story at that point.
The lesser investigation was more interesting as there was so much evidence suggesting Callanach committed the murder, though we believed he hadn't.
As with previous books, a story written in Edinburgh (or other cities with an identity) by someone who doesn't live there has a good chance of missing the mark with the dialogue. People we are led to believe are proper sumbags do not come across as that, their phrasing is just so wrong. I had found this in the previous books, where incidental characters had no discernible voice or characteristics and were just vanilla plot devices.
Similarly, the murderer at one point uses a phrase no Scotsman has ever uttered and that took me right out of the book.
The plot is more or less faultless, with all events and motives seeming plausible, except one issue right at the end where an item of evidence was so mis-handled as to be laughable, but served the plot perfectly.
On the whole, this was a good enjoyable read, but I had guessed the identities of the murderers quite early on. Far from original and moments that just felt like clangers.
I am guessing this is almost the last we'll see of Luc Callanach, who has (rightly) been relegated to support cast from book 2, in favour of the strong, better-defined, female character.

fabulous second book!
I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this book.
This is book TWO in the Digging Up Bones series, and you really SHOULD read book one, Bone To Pick, before you read this one. You'll need it to get a feel for Javi and Cloister before this book.
I'm not gonna write a blurby bit, cos if I'm honest (and I'm ALL about the honest!) I got a bit lost with the Janet Morrow storyline, and once I decided I would just read those bits, and not pay much attention, I liked this a lot better. Also being honest, this is highly likely to be ME (since I'm a bit of a mess at the moment) rather than this book, because I really did LOVE catching up with Javi, Cloister and Bournville!
They are such damaged, broken men, and it really is a pleasure watching them fall. Because they HAVE fallen, they just can't admit, not even to themselves, how much the other man means to him. Javi nearly does, but he shuts that thought down right quick! Cloister does admit he LIKES Javi, but I read far more into that, than was actually said.
It's the little things that tell a lot, you know? Like how Javi looks after Clositer when he gets hit by the truck. Like how Cloister tells Javi not to get shot. The random thoughts that make you giggle how they come out of nowhere, about they think about the other, about how they feel. They DO admit to feeling, at least to themselves, sorta, kinds, and it's those out of nowhere things I LOVE about these two! There is no way to predict where the comments and thoughts will come from. Love being kept on my toes.
We get more of Cloister's history, about his family and some of my questions (that I had after book one) are answered here. We get why Javi was sent to town, to work, after what happened in Phoenix.
I hope there is at least one more book, I really do! These guys NEED to be happy, like REALLY happy with each other and at the moment, while . . . . . content . . . .they aren't really happy. And you know, we don't know what's going to happen to Javi when his replacement comes to twon, a woman who does NOT have happy thoughts about Javi! And there is something going on in Javi's head about higher ups in the food chain, so I need to know about that!
So, thank you, Ms Moore, for my copy, I'm sorry I got a bit lost, but I'm still giving it the rating it deserves.

Arcanum Unbounded is an anthology of classic and epic proportions from a true Fantasy genius which was full to the brim of Brandon Sandersonâs Cosmere universe. The book followed characters we all know and love and plenty of new characters to fall for â Dusk, Iâm looking at you.
The book is divided up into âsystemsâ with a neat little explanation as to the layout of each system; which is then related to a specific setting from the Cosmere â Elantris, Mistborn, Threnody, First of the Sun and a previously unnamed and unpublished Stormlight Archive novella.
Oodles of Cosmere.
I donât want to go into too much detail about the individual shorts for those of you who have not read any the related systems books â (you have to!) â but each story gave a wonderful insight into the characters points of view and their unique history.
My favorites of this anthology would have to be The Emperorâs Soul, Sixth of the Dusk and Edgedancer. They each brought a little something special to this book â Emperorâs Soul took me right back to Elantris, the first ever Sanderson book I read and still my favorite to this day; Sixth of the Dusk had this overwhelming silence to it even when the characters involved were speaking (though this was few and far between in fairness) and this silence across the characters when Brandonâs characters usually talk so much was brilliantly done.
Edgedancer was a book in The Stormlight Archive system, though Iâm slightly ashamed to admit I havenât read all of The Stormlight Archive books yet, but I have them and this gave spoilers into The Words of Radiance (book 2 of the series so far) these spoilers are not really spoilers to me, maybe once Iâve read Radiance it will make a difference but my first read through made no spoilery difference to me.
Each individual short in the system was preceded by a little spoiler warning if there would be one, or a note stating where in the story arc it falls and was then followed by a sweet little Postscript from Brandon â each one tailor made for its preceding event; the best postscript was for The Hope of Elantris but I wonât give anything away, you had to read it.
Overall, Arcanum Unbounded is a perfect book to dive into Brandon Sandersonâs work as few of the stories in it actually need to be read before the main story â Mistborn: A Secret History, The Hope of Elantris, Edgedancer for definite. If youâre looking for a new fantasy author to sink your teeth into Brandon Sanderson is your man.
Arcanum Unbounded is an anthology of classic and epic proportions from a true Fantasy genius which was full to the brim of Brandon Sandersonâs Cosmere universe. The book followed characters we all know and love and plenty of new characters to fall for â Dusk, Iâm looking at you.
The book is divided up into âsystemsâ with a neat little explanation as to the layout of each system; which is then related to a specific setting from the Cosmere â Elantris, Mistborn, Threnody, First of the Sun and a previously unnamed and unpublished Stormlight Archive novella.

I donât want to go into too much detail about the individual shorts for those of you who have not read any the related systems books â (you have to!) â but each story gave a wonderful insight into the characters points of view and their unique history.
My favorites of this anthology would have to be The Emperorâs Soul, Sixth of the Dusk and Edgedancer. They each brought a little something special to this book â Emperorâs Soul took me right back to Elantris, the first ever Sanderson book I read and still my favorite to this day; Sixth of the Dusk had this overwhelming silence to it even when the characters involved were speaking (though this was few and far between in fairness) and this silence across the characters when Brandonâs characters usually talk so much was brilliantly done.
Edgedancer was a book in The Stormlight Archive system, though Iâm slightly ashamed to admit I havenât read all of The Stormlight Archive books yet, but I have them and this gave spoilers into The Words of Radiance (book 2 of the series so far) these spoilers are not really spoilers to me, maybe once Iâve read Radiance it will make a difference but my first read through made no spoilery difference to me.
Each individual short in the system was preceded by a little spoiler warning if there would be one, or a note stating where in the story arc it falls and was then followed by a sweet little Postscript from Brandon â each one tailor made for its preceding event; the best postscript was for The Hope of Elantris but I wonât give anything away, you had to read it.
Overall, Arcanum Unbounded is a perfect book to dive into Brandon Sandersonâs work as few of the stories in it actually need to be read before the main story â Mistborn: A Secret History, The Hope of Elantris, Edgedancer for definite. If youâre looking for a new fantasy author to sink your teeth into Brandon Sanderson is your man.

More entertaining than I expected.
Avengers: Infinity War was surprisingly entertaining. Iâm not a huge fan of the Avengers series, especially the big multi-cast productions. I fully expected to go into this one and be bored to tears. However, when it came to movies available in the cinema that we could also take the nine-year-old to⌠Pickings were slim. So, superheroes it was. And yeah, even though there were a few scenes that werenât nearly as funny as they were intended to be, it was an enjoyable watch.
I will say this: I did not understand what all the fuss was about the end. I saw people tweeting about crying and whatnot. I felt absolutely nothing. Itâs a Marvel movie. The sequel is due out in a year. We all know theyâre going to find a way to undo at least half of what happened in Avengers: Infinity War. Dramatic scenes lose much of their power when you know the chance of most of it not being negated in the next movie is practically nil. This Marvel money train is going to chug on until something happens to derail it completely.
I liked the interaction between most of the characters. I felt like they did a better job of making it seem a bit more realistic. I also like how some of the decisions and actions from the previous movies are coming back to bite the Avengers in the butt. Iron Man and Dr. Strange have a bit of a fun relationship. As for Spiderman⌠Well, heâs slowly winning me over. I still have absolutely zero desire to watch a movie just starring him, but he plays the impulsive teen angle well. Hulk, though, Sweet Baby Cthulhu, Iâm getting tired of that character. I didnât like the direction they took him in the Thor movie, and then for Banner to be the way he was in this one⌠ugh.
There were several scenes that made me gasp. A few where I was like âNO NO NO NO!â at the screen. Non-stop action and dialogue that wasnât too groan-worthy do a lot. A lot happier with this movie than I ever expected to be. Itâs not nearly as good as Black Panther was, but a solid offering nonetheless.

Wow! The cover for this book absolutely blew me away! I can just sit and stare at it....forever! Susan Anne Mason has done an exceptional job as the Montgomery and O'Leary families are brought together in another thrilling tale. We are reminded that even though we may not feel worthy of forgiveness or happiness, that Jesus paid the price for us to be free. Through him all our sins are forgiven and we have a new life ahead of us. No matter the past, there is no thing too great for God to forgive. He desires His children to walk in freedom and joy. Within the covers of this book, you will be challenged. Challenged to see yourself as God sees you. Pure and worthy of His love. This book made me laugh out loud, cry tears of joy and caused me to break my "diet" by eating Doritos uncontrollably! I believe that there is something in this story for everyone to relate to. Although this book can stand alone, I highly recommend reading the series. There are multiple characters that appear in A Worthy Heart that were the leading characters in Irish Meadows.

A Fun Romp
Any fan of one of the greatest TV series of all-time, BREAKING BAD, or itâs spin-off, BETTER CALL SAUL, know the acting chops that Bob Odenkirk brings to the role of slimey, billboard lawyer Saul Goodman. His fast-talking, fast-thinking con-man is a character for the ages.
So, naturally, one would think âaction starâ.
But, darn it, if it doesnât work.
Playing a retired undercover agent with a âcertain set of skillsâ, NOBODY follows âHutchâ Mansell as he gets pulled back into using those skills when he helps a young woman who is being harassed on a bus, only to find out the thugs he went against are connected to the Russian Mob.
You can pretty much fill in the blanks from there. This film does not really tread any new groundâŚbutâŚgoshâŚit was a fun watch.
Playing a more comedic hero than Liam Neeson in the TAKEN movies or Keanu Reevesâ JOHN WICK, Odenkirk, nonetheless, pulls off the âaction heroâ qualities just fine and is a winning enough presence on the screen that he holds your attention.
Christopher Lloyd (yes, Doc Brown from BACK TO THE FUTURE) is along for the ride as Odenkirkâs father, who gets pulled into the action when the Russian Mobsters decide to go after Hutchâs family and he looks like he is having a ball with this role.
The rest of the cast is pretty by-the-book (though a special shoutout needs to go to 1980âs heavy, Michael Ironside, who has a short role in this film - I would have loved to have seen more of him). The head Russian mobster is a bit over-the-top for my tastes, but the action sequences more than make up for all of this.
Credit for that must be given to Director Ilya Naishuller (HARDCORE HENRY) for he gives this film a unique look in the fight scenes while constantly having his tongue placed firmly in his cheek. Iâve seen ALOT of action films, so when a film brings something unique and fun to the screen, I sit up and notice.
And, notice I did. For NOBODY is a fun, popcorn flick. One that will be entertaining for the 92 minutes you watch.
Just donât expect to see it during Awards season next year.
