ClareR (5911 KP) rated The Lamplighters in Books
Mar 14, 2022
The Lamplighters is a locked room (lighthouse!) mystery, which had me gripped up to the last page. How could three men go missing from a tower lighthouse, with no way off back to land. There’s no boat, no-one visited them - and what’s more, the lighthouse is locked from the inside when the investigation team arrive.
This is a mystery that affects their wives and partners even 20 years later. A writer contacts the three women and asks them to cooperate with him as he writes a book about the mystery. It seems that all three women held back secrets during the original investigation - but will the uncovering of these secrets make any difference?
The Lamplighters is told in flashbacks, alternating between the present day with the women, and the lead up to the disappearance with the men in the lighthouse. The lighthouse chapters in particular are seriously atmospheric, threatening, even. I had so many ideas as to what could have happened, my opinion changing constantly as more information was revealed. I didn’t guess the actual ending though, even after I’d described the basic storyline of the book to my husband, and he got it in one (note to self: do not discuss mystery books with the husband, AKA “Dr” Poirot…)
Highly recommended.

MusicCritics (472 KP) rated Hi Vis High Tea by Frenzal Rhomb in Music
Sep 21, 2017
Twenty songs clocking in at just over thirty minutes – short and to the point. If you are remotely into three-part vocal harmonies paired with catchy and upbeat tunes and peppered with smart lyrics, this will be right up your alley.

Erika (17789 KP) rated Penny Dreadful - Season 1 in TV
Oct 24, 2017
Eve Green is everything in this show. She and Josh Hartnett are the saving graces. Out of all the penny dreadful/gothic horror, etc stories they could have pulled from, they chose.. Frankenstein, Dracula, and Dorian Grey? It could have been so much better. The season finale didn't make me feel like I wanted to watch seasons two or three.

Erika (17789 KP) rated John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) in Movies
Nov 27, 2017
Chapter 2 wasn't necessarily better than the first John Wick, but I didn't have to see his poor dead puppy. The action was good, and everything was well-choreographed. I love knowing that Keanu did the stunts, and he's just general a bad ass as John Wick. I'm not sure where Chapter Three will go, but I'm definitely, anxiously awaiting it.

I was completely disappointed with this book. It was boring and lack luster. Maybe I jumped into this book with high expectations and I say that because I couldn't get enough of the author's The Selection series. I am going it three stars because it isn't the author's fault that I jumped into it with the expectations that I did.

Great Children's Book
This book is a great quick for when you have a spare five minutes lying around. Although the characters seems to be a little underdeveloped for my taste, I still love the story line. This is probably because I enjoyed the film so much and could easily imagine the characters and their mannerisms.

Shaun Collins (3 KP) rated Doctor Who: I.D. and Urgent Calls in Books
Jan 12, 2018
Another exceptional Big Finish tale with the Sixth Doctor. I.D. plays out over three parts as opposed to the normal four and really benefits from the shortened run time, as it forces the truncated story to be tighter, faster paced and less stuffed. Urgent Calls is a fun one-parter. For more on these, check out our reviews at www.travelingthevortex.com

Easy to read fictional story based on real murders commited at the same time as jack the ripper. focusing on three characters. The author depicts the seedier side of london with the opium dens and the prospect of fear and death around every corner. wonderfully atmospheric. can`t wait for the next book for the further adventures of Dr Bond
