"This is one of the most beautiful movies ever made. Even with the atrocities and torture, it has real texture and an aesthetic aspect to it. Even the shit looks special. Pasolini is a very dear person for me. You have people who are Christian filmmakers or left-wing filmmakers or liberal filmmakers, but then you have a person like him, just a gay leftist who made the best Bible movie ever. I think that says something about how he could catapult himself into these big political discussions in a way that not everyone can do. If Paul Greengrass made this movie, you would get something that would be interesting politically, but you wouldn’t get any kind of texture or beauty. So that’s what I really admire about Pasolini, that in the midst of all this torture and sadism the movie is still very beautiful and very unique."

This book was assigned over the summer of the 9th grade year... WOOF. Reading this was torture, analyzing it was easy, thank god. I read a lot of books, and this one never had my attention, and I think it's severely overrated. I could not drink the kool-aid on this one.
The only reason I still have my copy is because it's now worth a bit more money than I bought it for.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was incredible. The writing is at the same time lyrical and cinematic and absolutely breath-taking.

I was thouroughly invested in Janneke's love/hate relationship with Soren and how she dealt with the effects of her horrendous torture at the hands of a sadist.

Brilliant book.

Finished the story.

I have 3 words:

I. Need. More.

No, really. I won't die, but it'll be agony until I find out what happens next. It's pure torture. Pfft. Welcome to cliffhanger island. The island where you can be holding onto so many cliffs yet you can still add more cliffs to it. >_< I'm surprised I'm still hanging on. :p

Meanwhile...
Just keep waiting, just keep waiting, just keep waiting, waiting, waiting.
