Ross (3284 KP) rated Steelheart in Books

I enjoyed reading a superhero story rather than the traditional graphic novel format, and feel it was quite well delivered.
The narration is a little too fan-boy for my liking and at times is quite irritating.
The plot is great and action rolls along at a good pace, with mostly good characters introduced, though they all feel a little clichéd.
I did like the premise where those with superpowers are in charge and the world does their bidding. I would love to read a prequel book where the superheroes fought and divided the world up into fiefdoms for all the most powerful, though at the same time having little on the "origin story" works out quite well in this case.

Ruth Frampton (577 KP) rated Santa's Countdown to Christmas: 24 Days of Stories in Books
Apr 10, 2018
Advent calendars have changed a great deal over the past 40 years, they've been the traditional Christian images depicting the story of the season, to ones containing sweet and then even to have candles, beer and a range of consumerisms finest. More recently, a trend of giving a book a day for advent has been doing the rounds, a great, if expensive, idea. This book put that all in one book with a story a day for advent. The language used in the book is engaging and supportive of good reading. It promotes the good things about the holiday season and encourages youngsters to give without thought of receiving. A real book to be read with and to the whole family, a book for all ages.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Jurassic Park (1993) in Movies
Feb 19, 2018 (Updated Feb 19, 2018)
Spielberg's eek-it's-a-dinosaur adventure movie may not have the gobsmack value it once possessed when photo-realistic CGI had yet to rule the earth, but still stands up well due to traditional storytelling virtues, retains the power to irritate palaeontologists with its dubious approach to nomenclature.
Billionaire with mysterious background (i.e. Lord Attenborough's accent wanders a bit) plans to open high-tech theme park with real live dinosaurs; clearly hasn't seen Westworld; chasing about ensues. Long build-up before the biting starts to happen, but Spielberg's corralling of the action sequences is masterly and the casting is extremely good. Still not sure it warranted five whole sequels, but that's what a massive box office take gets you, I suppose.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Murder on the Orient Express (2017) in Movies

Hard to see past the moustache
Nice-looking and competent new version of the Agatha Christie classic, made in the traditional all-star manner. A bit hard to be gripped by the actual murder-mystery plot, but maybe that's because the twist in this story is so famous it barely qualifies as such any more.
Often looks more like a commercial for a luxury railway touring holiday than an actual thriller, but I suppose the production values are part of the appeal of this sort of film. Ken Branagh is arguably just a little bit hammy as a version of Poirot who appears to have some form of ASD, but he has a certain moral authority. Probably won't rock your world but passes the time nicely enough.

I watched this movie not too long ago at family movie night and everyone there enjoyed it. It is hard to find a movie that my family will all enjoy and agree on, but this one was awesome. The movie mainly follows two competitive, game-obsessed people and their friends as a traditional game night takes them on a wild and unexpected adventure. The movie kind of keeps you guessing and enthralled. There is lots of funny parts (some mildly inappropriate if I'm remembering correctly) and is over all very entertaining. It is your typical comedy, but manages to make all the usual cliches seem interesting and hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would not mind watching it again. Would recommend.

James Koppert (2698 KP) rated Afro-Polo by A-F-R-O / Marco Polo in Music
Nov 7, 2019
Whered he come from?
Where did A-F-R-O come from? He did a couple of guest spots with the likes of RA the Rugged Man and really impressed but did we expect this??
Marco Polo brings that traditional boom bap New York sound, you know what you getting, business as usual and all good here. There is a song featuring Gift of Gab and RA the Rugged Man and that's a perfect reference point for A-F-R-O's flow, it's that scattered pin point accurate raps and if he keeps up this consistency on a few more releases he could be widely recognised in grandeur.
