After seeing the buzz and positive reviews surrounding this book, I figured I'd give it a try. I'm always wary now when they liken a current author to Agatha Christie (cough, cough, Ruth Ware), because these authors do not deserve the honor.
The characters were ok and predictable. It was true to life, the situation with old friends, and how you don't have anything really in common anymore, but you force yourself to still hang out with them.
The plot was so rollicking, it just needed to get to the point. The red herrings were stupid and too numerous. The events were predictable, and the end was meh.

I probably won't read anything else by this author.

"I left Africa and childish things, and went to live in Paris, where Thérèse Raquin kept me on the straight and narrow. Read at an impressionable age, it’s a very important moral life lesson about guilt and consequences—without ever having to stick your finger into the pit of hell itself. At the time I was going to the American Library, and looking at the handsome boys who didn’t know I existed because I was a little chubby teenager. The descriptions of Therese sitting there with Laurent, playing dominoes in their house above the shop, and that burning desire for somebody rang very true for a little plump 14-year-old on the banks of the Seine."

"This isn't part of any phase in my life. I just heard it on Peel, and it had this "gathering of the tribes" time signature - not sure if that's true or not, but it's such a strange record. The delivery... the first line, "Saw her face in the window, it looks quite strange..." That's brilliant. And it's like an odd, surreal miniature. I don't know what it is that makes me like it so much. The chorus goes, "I just can't believe that looking over you, I find you appealing, but it seems that I do." That sums up the way I feel about the record. It's not a pretty record, but I love it."
