An interesting view of Islamophobia and muslims living in the UK.
The story of a Muslim family living in London, persecuted by the ghost of their jihadi father. Narrated by five protagonists, who express five different views on today's attitudes of being Muslim in a western country: (non) respect towards religions, the traditional vs modern, what it means to be a Muslim in today's world, and in particular, it's the story of stigmatisation. An interesting, topical story that shows our diverse world, and how we MUST look at what is causing radicalisation.

Hazel (2934 KP) rated A Missing, Presumed in Books
Jan 12, 2018 (Updated Jan 12, 2018)
This is a pretty good book, not the best I’ve read, but pretty good. There are some great characters, especially the lead protagonist DS Manon Bradshaw with whom I felt able to connect with. The writing flowed well making it easy to read. The story kept my interest throughout and I felt the police investigation aspect was quite believable.
This is the first in a series of books featuring DS Bradshaw, I am tempted to read more.
Thanks go to the publisher, HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction and NetGalley for my copy in return for an unbiased review.

Hazel (2934 KP) rated Dead Man Walking (DS Heckenburg, #4) in Books
Jan 12, 2018
This is the fourth outing for the main character, DS Mark Heck Heckenberg. Despite not having read any of the previous ones, it didn't matter as the author was adept at developing the characters and giving them real depth and bringing them to life and I dont feel I lost out at all not having read any of the others.

Crazy plot
One of the most original horror films in years
I had heard weird and wonderful things about this film, thus expecting something totally different to the norm. You can figure out early on the general feel of the film.... But in the final third it racks up the craziness! Some plot lines did remind me of some other films. The ending could have been drawn out a bit longer as well. I throughly enjoyed it. Good to see Daniel Kayuula in something mainstream, having seen him in some UK TV series in the past. One to watch.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as the first one.
The TV show has just started on Fox in the UK so I thought it would be a good time to read book 2.
It was a little confusing as the original group of people in the first book have dispersed and I couldn’t keep up with who or where they were. There are also other characters which seem to be part human part viral.
Considering whether or not to read book 3 as the ending of this one makes me wonder where the story goes next.

Good SFX for the budget
A great Upgrade
I saw this the other night after seeing good reviews for it. I'm not sure if it got a cinema release in the UK? It's a great Australian made film. A bit like a sci-fi Deathwish mixing humans with advanced Ai technology and body enhancements. The technology shown in the film, set in the near future, is really good and not far from what is available. This made the film more interesting. Throw in some good action and SFX and you have a great film that went under the radar.

TV shows seem current
Although there is quite a lot available to us in the UK, it's not as much as what I know is available in the US. Also, I dislike how I've recently learnt that not everything is accessible if you're accessing Netflix through your TV or games console. Only a small proportion of content is available, nased on your previous selections. If I'm paying for the service, I want to be able to access the whole thing, not just what Netflix think I might like!!
If you want to know anything behind the modern Middle East, this is the book for you. It does such a good job finding the foundations for the current mess in that area. Most of it stems from the First World War, and this book does focus on T.E. Lawrence (AKA Lawrence of Arabia). Lawrence was one of the people responsible for leaders in the Middle East to join WW1, but then after the war, the UK, France, and the US backtracked and made a complete mess out of everything. Overall, a great book to get some background on the situation.

A gritty hard thriller about a cop killer in London. It has a great well known UK cast, more TV than film though. The only real problem is the story they have to work with, it's a bit weak at best. As a result there is very little suspense in the plot, it also has a fairly low budget feel to it. It's ok for those who like a quick fix of action/thriller with a simple basic story. Others might like a bit more substance in the plot, which could have made it a lot better.
