Lady Bird (2017)
Lady Bird (2017)
2017 | Comedy, Drama
Warm and funny coming-of-age movie written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Seventeen-year-old girl Christine (aka Lady Bird) contends with the last year of school, troublesome romances, college applications, and her fraught relationship with her mother.

You could argue that there's nothing going on here we haven't seen in a dozen other movies, but surely the point of a coming-of-age movie (which is what this obviously is) is that it deals with universal experiences. This one feels fresh and sincere, anyway, even if it isn't actually autobiographical (or so we are assured). It's a bit dismaying to realise that people are now making films which are nostalgic about the 20th century, but the period detail is well-judged, along with everything else. Great performances and some lovely scenes, and very positive in a way that feels extremely of this moment, without seeming overly angry or political. A charming movie that deserves all the success it has achieved.

Loved this movie
This is a must see for all Harry Potter fans. Newt is a fantastic main character and in this film he and everyone else have some hard decisions to make.
There are a few different story lines in the movie, so Newt isn't the only character that holds your attention. All of these stories meet in the end, and the ending leaves the viewer with more questions. I think the movie ended in a really good spot. It felt complete while still making me look forward to the next installment.
The only real problem with this movie is that at times it doesn't follow universal rules that were introduced in Harry Potter. These things are usually very minor, and I think a lot of people won't notice them right away. For me that was the only downside to the movie I would have preferred they stayed true to the original.

I completely agree with your last paragraph and I wasn't thrilled with the recon of canon, at all.

Nostalgia galore
Likeable characters
The Goldbergs looks and feels like the American family based sitcoms I grew up with in the UK, this is the big appeal from this show, the familiarity and soundtrack of simpler days. The characters are clearly defined from the start and you can identify each of their strengths and vulnerabiltes and how these are used as the season progresses.

When watching this with my daughter aged 11 she gets the humour and she has a sense of wonder at how technology used to be and how the fashions have changed. It gives us more to talk about and shows the universal appeal of the Goldbergs.

Sometimes there is no need to reinvent what works and with the clever writing in this show makes it enjoyable and each episode can be viewed repeatedly. This is the benchmark I use for sitcoms and this works for me. Long live the 80s and all who use mind deloreans to travel back there.
