Entry number 24 in Simon Scarrow's long running Cato and Macro series, set largely in and around Rome in the time of Nero.

Yes, that Nero.

the one who (famously) "fiddled while Rome burnt".

And, indeed, a fire in Rome plays a pivotal role in this, with Cato put in charge of the much-maligned urban cohorts by a fickle Nero and appointing (the now supposedly retired) Macro as his second-in-command.

If you've read any of the previous books you'll - largely - know what to expect, although -as Cato has now moved up in society - we're moving away from the wars of the earlier novels into more political (but just as, if not more so) dangerous waters.

Second entry in Ben Aaronovitch's 'River of London' series of urban fantasy novels, following a young police officer in Londons Met Police who discovered, in the previous novel ('Rivers of London') that there is also a division that looks after supernatural events; said division now only consisting of himself (as an apprentice) and his wizardly boss.

In this entry - which does, loosely, deal with the fallout from the previous novel - Peter Grant finds himself investigating the death of a Jazz musician, which eventually ties back to his own father's failed musical career and certain (here, unknowing and unwitting) 'creatures of the night' whose description begins with a V...

Not as good, IMO, as the first entry.
