What do you get when you mix gorgons, an incubus, and the Calamity Queen? Trouble, and lots of it.

Putting on the Witch is a part urban fantasy, and part cozy mystery. I’ve read (and enjoyed) other paranormal cozies, but Putting on the Witch is in a class of its own. The fantasy element and magical world building was wonderfully done. The mystery is well-written, the characters are likable (at least most of them are!), and I loved every word of it.

NOTE: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, and hope Battis returns to this world. His prose is lyrical, engaging—a major departure from most of the urban fantasy genre. There were a few little consistency blips that made me think that the book had been edited with less care than it deserved, but they didn't detract seriously from the plot.

Julie Kagawa is one of the only authors who actually seems to be able to write a decent urban fantasy series. While this isn't going to have the same level of depth as something like LotR, this series is still a fun read with interesting and memorable characters. Would definitely recommend this over Wicked Lovely or Beautiful Creatures.

A very odd mix of stories that feature a harvest moon and only the first by Lackey fits the cover, of which makes me think of fairies and moonbeams.
Overall: 3.5 stars

A Tangled Web by Mercedes Lackey (Light Fantasy)
A retelling of the Greek myth pertaining to Persephone and Hades, with some added Norse mythology. A cute story, if a little thin on actual plot. I'll probably forget it by next week.
2.5 stars/5

Cast in Moonlight by Michelle Sagara (Fantasy/Urban Fantasy hybrid)
Fascinating mythology and world-building, intriguing characters and races. If I hadn't already been interested in reading the Chronicles of Elantra series, this would have done it. Pretty much a perfect story that stands alone quite well.
5 stars

Retribution by Cameron Haley (Urban Fantasy)
A solid short story dealing with a sorcerer and enforcer for a mob boss. Has some interesting ideas and is a promising beginning to a new series. While it does have cursing, it feels authentic and fits the scenes and characters. This is definitely not a story for the faint of heart.

First thing I have to say is the cover really put me off. I expected it to be some sort of paranormal romance, when currently I'm into my Urban Fantasy Romance's, where the romance part doesn't take up most of the story and happens as a sort of product of them being thrown together to fight whatever evil they have to face together. Well, this was more of an Urban Fantasy Romance, thank God.

The world building was very interesting and the Prime's of this world; terrifying. It was like they were missing some integral part of their psyche where they fought killing people who annoyed them was acceptable. But Mad Rogan had some redeemable qualities in the end and I grew to really like him.

I cannot wait to see what happens next with these two.
