Outlaw King (2018)
Outlaw King (2018)
2018 | Action, Drama, History
Opens with the threat of sweeping, gorgeous spectacle but not long after just sort of settles for a collection of watchable action scenes - and that's fine I guess. You've still got Taylor-Johnson in tasty nut mode (complete with peculiar accent) and some dirty, brute violence that doesn't fully satisfy but comes closer than a lot of these outings usually do. Nothing special whatsoever and actually made me retroactively second-guess how good 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘳 𝘏π˜ͺ𝘨𝘩 𝘞𝘒𝘡𝘦𝘳 actually was but you could do worse. I'm just tired of this rote historical B.S.

"Terrence Malick is the preeminent practicing metaphysician of the cinema. In his brilliant and haunting first feature, he tells the story of a vicious young serial killer and his impassive underage girlfriend, both perfectly rendered by Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. The violence unfolds in the context of a vastly uncaring natural world and is relayed to us by the girl through a detached narration utterly innocent of emotion. The result is not a moral inquiry into human action but rather a compelling meditation on the nature of being itself."

"Youthful optimism and sexuality are thwarted by the bitterness of a crumbling town in Peter Bogdanovich’s lovely film of Larry McMurtry’s novel. One can feel the influence of John Ford and Orson Welles in both the deep focus compositions and the unexpected bursts of volatility. For example: there’s a fantastic scene where an argument between Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms escalates into a fistfightβ€”the shots start to come faster and faster, almost every new shot from a different camera angle, culminating in a shocking moment of violence."

"My first foreign film experience, at the age of eleven, is one of the finest films on the subject of the Holocaust. Without showing any scenes of extreme violence, it fully realizes, through its simple characters, the devastation of what happened and how it can happen if people don’t pay attention or fall prey to delusion. Here is where I also discovered great acting for the first time. Forty years later, Ida Kaminska and Josef Kroner’s performances remain amongst the best I have ever seen on the screen."

The Hughes brothers make quite an impactful debut with this realistically powerful and violently graphic story.
I found similarities between this and Carlito's Way in that it's a story about changing one's life no matter how bad it was before things get out of hand and time runs out for you.
The gang violence is excessive and the story line shows that growing up in this environment makes it very difficult to escape from.
It's one of the better gang related movies alongside Boyz n The Hood and has a strong message.

Twisted
Not sure what I expected from this one but the description only scratches the surface. This one is not for kids or the feint of heart as the material is very graphic(violence, nudity, sex). The acting was ok and the cinematography good but the story was just weird. Somewhat predictable(not completely) it played out slowly like a "group" version of "The Wicker Man". If you're into "cult" style stories(in the guise of ancient nordic traditions) you'll enjoy this slow burner. Otherwise, not really worth a watch.

Not bad
Dakota Fanning and Guy Pearce syst in this "western". Both give great performances(as do the other actors/actresses. The cinematography is very well done and the story itself plays out well. Normally I don't like when a story "jumps around" in time but this one did it well. Right up to the end. Pearce plays one hell of a villain. This one isn't really for the kids as it involves some violence/sex against children(not graphic). Otherwise, if you like westerns, this one will entertain. Worth a watch!
