From running to more of a brisk walk
Season 5 of the seamingly unstoppable The Walking Dead is where the zombie series gets really comfortable in it's two-or-three-great-episodes-surrounded-by-filler formula.

The season opens with a hell of a bang - the season premiere 'No Sanctuary' is easily one of the best TWD episodes ever aired.
It's a big pay off moment for a certain character that has been a fan favourite for a while.
After that, season 5 is a bit of a slog. We're introduced to new characters who fail to make much of an impact - with exceptions here and there (Aaron).

In terms of plot, the Terminus cannibals plot line feels over and done with far too quickly, where as a side plot involving Beth, and group of new survivors seems to drag on way past it's welcome. That plotline comes to head in the mid season finale "Coda" which has some truly chilling moment, and is a season highlight.

We're also introduced to the town of Alexandria in this season, which is a slow start, but becomes a hugely important locale going forward.

The cast are all pretty great, the main problem with TWD at this point is some of the writing and pacing.
It becomes quite trying at times, which is a shame as it still definitely has flashes of brilliance.

After watching from the start I jumped ship from 'The Walking Dead' a few episodes into season 8 disillusioned and bored. The show had become a relentlessly pessimistic slog that had no idea where it was going with endless filler episodes and the increasingly tedious Negan storyline.

I had heard good things about season 9 and the good things new showrunner Angela Kang had done so decided to give it another shot and I am seriously glad I did as it turned out to be one of the best seasons and I binged it in a week.

The writing has a new sense of urgency (not to mention a touch of humour and optimism) and has been reinvigorated by the six year time jump and the departure of Rick Grimes. It seems they thought they had to up their game after losing their leading man and I have liked the new characters (particularly the older Judith) they've introduced and seeing a much bigger role for Darryl.

I was surprised to see Negan still around but he was actually put to good use with some interesting unexpected scenes.

This season also showed the show can still be scary and shocking ending in devastating fashion following a confrontation with the new big baddie the psychotic Alpha and her whisperer.

Here's hoping the resurrection continues for season 10 as I am starting that next!

The opening chapters were great, but I'm not sure I would call home about it.
Let's start with the good: who doesn't love a firefighter romance? I mean, there's hot and then there is HOT.
Immediately, I was given stakes. There were fires and lives on the line. Decisions that would alter a life forever. Amazing characters and the kind of tension I could shatter my little heart with, It was like I was walking a tightrope --and I was hooked. This was GREAT.

But then about 50% through the book, I realized I had no clue where the story was going. There was definitely a lag for me, a slump where the plot seemed to just hover and not really move forward. The whole premise promised in the blurb of Anne hunting down a killer kinda stalls. I found myself actively looking for action, but unable to find really any movement forward. By the end, much of the plot came together. However, it was too rushed. I truly feel this could have had better pacing to it and a better Act 2 to support the story.

That aside, the book is great for anyone who doesn't mind the hiccups and lags. But for me, I'm not sure I would read this again, which is sad because I do like some of Ward's other books.
