"The Criterion Collection contains some of the greatest documentaries, and these are my favorites. These discs give you a good dose of Werner Herzog (in front of the camera), Les Blank, and Errol Morris. You also get the short Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, which makes me laugh me every time I watch it."

"Les Blank’s films resonate deeply with me, as do those of Werner Herzog, who is the subject of Burden of Dreams. One of the best films about filmmaking."

"Along with Hearts of Darkness, Burden of Dreams is the best primer for how far we have gone to make art. And it is also a tremendous representation of the spirit of cinematic warriors Werner Herzog and Les Blank"

"I had the pleasure of working with the director of this film, Werner Herzog, recently. He is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers. In Fitzcarraldo, he manages to bring an opera house into a Peruvian jungle. What an amazing concept!"

"I guess because Werner Herzog might be the coolest man in the world. I like how he inserts himself into all of his stories. I’m a big fan of, I guess, “direct” cinema, but I don’t believe that a documentarian has to be a fly on the wall. That would be dull. I would listen to Herzog read anything. He could read the yellow pages. [On the influence of Herzog on Catfish] I guess just the basic instinct on our part just to be in our own films, to be a cameraman and a voice behind the camera and perhaps a character at times. We definitely get that from Herzog."

"Stroszek by Werner Herzog. It’s such a hard movie not to like. You have this character who has these hopes and dreams, he wants to come to America and he’s a struggling, failed musician but he also really cares about everybody else around him, and he doesn’t judge the people around him, no matter what their faults may be. I like the characters and just the story itself."
