James Koppert (2698 KP) rated The Snail and the Whale in TV
Dec 27, 2019
Another Julia Donaldson
This animation company saw great success animating the gruffalo, then the gruffalo's child and have continued the pattern until we are on Julia Donaldson's Snail and The Whale. Here we have characters true to the original illustrations gliding through incredibly animated water in this heartwarming story of a snail who lives on a rock but wants to see the world so gets a lift on the tail of a whale. It's made for small children and is full of innocence and charm and is very very watchable. What's makes Donaldson's books work is her charming simple stories but also her rhythm. The TV show keeps the rhythm but slows it right down to create a peaceful dream like film. They don't overcomplicated it, they just deliver the book and make it cute.

Andrew Furlong (14 KP) rated Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home (1986) in Movies
Sep 27, 2017
An absolutely ridiculous premise, turned into an actually good film (4 more)
Lots of "funny fish out of water" comedy
Every character gets their moment to shine
The whale probe has an aura of mystery about it
Infectiously upbeat
Not as thematically engaging as previous films (2 more)
May be too light for some
Saavik is dropped randomly
The funniest Trek
"The one with the whales" might seem ridiculous at first glance, but it's played with such sincerity and heart from the cast that it becomes genuinely funny and endearing. A great crowdpleaser.

Movie Metropolis (309 KP) rated Gods and Monsters (1998) in Movies
Jun 10, 2019
McKellen teamed up with director Bill Condon in 1998 for Gods & Monsters. This period drama recounts the partly fictionalised last days of the life of film director James Whale, whose experience of war in the First World War is a central theme.
Although criticised for being overly-simplistic, McKellen’s performance received rave reviews, and he was nominated for his first Academy Award in the Best Actor category. Unfortunately, he didn’t go on to win this time around, but it remained a highlight in a career filled with fabulous work.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2086 KP) rated Mr. Monk Gets Even (Mr. Monk, #15) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
There are several accidents in San Francisco that Monk decides are murders. Meanwhile, Dale the Whale is out of prison for an operation. Is he going to try to escape? And will that distract Monk from the other case? For those who have been following the books, this is a great pay off for the arcs that Lee has been building. I loved seeing where the characters wound up and am interested to see how the next author will pick up from here.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Theatre of Blood (1973) in Movies
Feb 14, 2018 (Updated Feb 14, 2018)
The Play's the Thing
Indisputably the best of the Vincent Price 'madman on a vengeful killing spree' movies from the early 70s, allowing Price to give full reign to his remarkable talents. Ham actor Edward Lionheart gets his own back on pretentious critics by performing various gory Shakespearean scenes for real; this gives him the opportunity to disguise himself as such diverse characters as a chef, a policeman, Butch the gay hairdresser, and many more; Price is having a whale of a time throughout, as you'd expect.
Notable also for an astonishingly good cast of British character actors, most of whom are only in a couple of scenes before they get murdered. Consistently witty and inventive, even a little moving in parts as well. Point knocked off for not letting Price get away with it!
