Mermaid Fins, Winds & Rolling Pins (Spells & caramels 3)
By Erin Johnson
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Scheming pirates. Reveling mermaids. When murder crashes the party, can one witch dredge up the killer?

Imogen's personal spellcraft lessons with Prince Hank have sparked a different type of magic between them. So when she's invited to bake for the mermaid queen's lavish wedding, she hopes the underwater ceremony will help cool off their growing attraction. But between the temptations of the sea-cave nightlife and the discovery of a murdered royal court member, her emotions are rising higher than the tide.

When one of her signature treats is found in the dead mermaid's gills, she'll have to stow her feelings and wade through the clues to clear her name. But surrounded by hard-partying revelers, a scandalous royal court, and a shipload of pirates, the twisted truth may be more elusive than sunken treasure.

With rough waters closing in, can Imogen catch the real killer before she has to walk the plank?

I enjoyed most of this book and really this should be a 2.5 stars but went for the 3 as 2 would have been to low. This is the weakest so for for me and all down to the way the mermaids and pirates were written it got on my nerves. Other than that it was a good read I just can’t get past that annoying queen mermaid and her dumb pirate!

The Ex Hex
By Erin Sterling
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

This was a fun light read. Inoffensive and such a joy to read. Funny in places too. It was a very hyped up book and for once I was glad I actually lived up to expectations.

Dulcinea Macgregor Craven is the only child of a wealthy English viscount. She is also a natural witch, one of a long line of Macgregor witches on her mother's side. When her parents are killed in a carriage accident, Dulcie doesn't think her life can get much worse. Then an old childhood friend returns to the country a little bit differently than he left and vows that nothing will stop him from possessing her and her magic.

In a desperate attempt to save her life, Dulcie summons a trio of vampires called The Righteous to her aid. With the help of The Righteous and four human friends, Dulcie attempts to thwart her enemy's plans to capture her and use her magic for his own evil purposes.

Even as she falls in love for the first time, Dulcie realizes that she may have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save the world.

I absolutely loved this book historical fiction meets urban fantasy just couldn’t put it down. Dulci is brilliant and I love the Righteous especially Justine. Not what I was expecting at all. As Dulcie becomes CIN she develops more and into a much stronger character and female lead! I’m hoping to learn more on the werewolf “woof” in the next book.

VIOLET SPARK is the first book in The Butterfly Witch series. Mo (Imogen) has a normal life - in that she has dropped out of school to look after her mom, is Manager at the local Desert Freeze shop, and games until she can no longer keep her eyes open. She can't see that changing anytime soon, but when another gamer kisses her in the shop, her life explodes into something she never expected.

If you are expecting Mo to understand what is going on, to have all the answers there, to look divine, without a care in the world, then I'm afraid you've got the wrong book! Mo is completely realistic in her reactions to what is going on. You are with her all the way as she keeps the reader informed of her feelings and decisions through internal monologues.

One thing I loved (without spoilers) is both Mo and her mom are not taking any prisoners! They are not princesses to await rescue. They'll rescue themselves, thank you very much!!!

A great start to the series that I feel only dips beneath the surface. Looking forward to reading further in this series. Absolutely recommended by me.

How could I not enjoy The Beautiful Ones? It’s basically Jane Austen with added magic!

Nina has been sent to Losail for her debut into fashionable society - and more importantly, to find a husband. But the chances of her becoming one of the Beautiful Ones is remote. She has the reputation of being the Witch of Oldhouse, and struggles to control her telekinesis. Beautiful ones do not show off any gifts they might have in public.

However when Nina meets the mysterious entertainer Hector Auvray, she falls for him: his life experience and his ability to control his telekinesis. What’s more, he starts to help Nina control her own talents.

Nina is sheltered and naive. Everything she has learnt about romance has come from the pages of a book, and life just isn’t like that, especially for socialites who must marry for advantage and connections.

I could feel Nina’s frustration at her limitations (and agreed with her), and wanted so much to warn her. SO MANY TIMES!

Nina’s cousins wife is awful. Shes a sad, vindictive woman that I loved to hate.

The descriptions of clothing and etiquette were both captivating and frankly, mind blowing. I would most certainly have been a peasant- there’s no way I could have lived like that! The attention to ‘historical’ detail made me believe this could have genuinely happened. Just excellent world building!

I loved this book ❤️

I absolutely love this boxed set from Hazel Hunter. She writes an amazing novella/short story, but having the opportunity to read them all back-to-back, makes for a more complete experience for me, (plus, I'm not too good with cliffhangers!).

This set tells the story of Summer, who has been living rough in Central Park for the last six months, with no previous memories of who she is or how she got there. Michael is a Templar that has been watching her, supposedly to make sure that she doesn't hurt any humans, but more because he feels a deep connection to her. Because she is a witch, he telephones Troy, a warlock with whom he has a long and tumultuous relationship. And so we start...

This is exceedingly well-written, with multiple points of view so that you get the complete picture. The 'big bad' is well hidden until the penultimate book when I figured it out, but I thought that it was still brilliant! The relationship between Summer, Michael, and Troy is heartfelt and touching. With amazing supporting characters, this is a story that will grip and enchant you, right up to the climax and epilogue. Definitely recommended.
