Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
2016 | Comedy, Horror, Romance
As a fan of the Pride and Prejudice book by Jane Austen, I thought it was all kinds of wrong when I came across the parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, by Seth Grahame-Smith, that essentially Austen’s classic novel with elements of modern zombie fiction. Mainly because I’m not a fan of horror movies. So as we approached the theater where we were screening Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I told my husband, “I really don’t want to watch this. I hate zombies.” He just laughed. “You hate zombies, but you watch Walking Dead. Just pretend it’s an episode of Walking dead. Just set near the Victorian era.” I admit, I do watch the Walking Dead but it’s the most stressful hour of television for me, and there are commercial breaks. This movie has a running time for this move was almost 2 hrs with no commercials.

But the movie got a giggle out of me in the first 5 minutes. And of course it made me gasp not long after. But Walking Dead has trained me well, and it wasn’t too long ago that I watched Hateful Eight, so I think I’m quite desensitized to blood and gore now, and in comparison, PPZ was relatively mild in that regard. It also had enough of the elements of the original story that fighting zombies actually became an entertaining digression. You know – beautiful young ladies, dashing young men, ballroom dancing, budding romance, zombie attack.

“To succeed in polite society, a young woman must be many things. Kind… well-read… and accomplished. But to survive in the world as WE know it, you’ll need… other qualities.” Those qualities include being skilled in the martial arts and weapons training, while wearing a corset –essentially making them Regency era bad-asses.

Because I don’t watch Downton Abbey, the last time I saw Lily James, who plays Elizabeth Bennett, she was brilliantly blond and sweetly keeping her promise to her mother to “have courage and be kind.” as Cinderella. In PPZ, she’s a fierce brunette who doesn’t take too kindly to Fitzwilliam Darcy, played by a sullen and haughty Sam Riley – another Disney alum, last seen as Diaval, Maleficent’s companion raven.

Where the Jane Austen’s Mr. Darcy is won over by Elizbeth’s charm and wit, PPZ’s Darcy is slowly won over by Elizabeth’s aggressive and bold battle skills. Adding the alternate history of how zombies came to be a part of Regency era England hurried the story along, so the romantic developments felt a bit rushed, but Riley’s Darcy was quite believable in his reluctant but growing admiration of Elizabeth.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie, zombies and all. When you can get guys to cheer for some undead’s head getting blown off, and still make the ladies sigh for the romance, you have a pretty perfect date movie. It may very well be my favorite period costume romantic zombie action film.

This was not good. Like really, really not good. I really, really wanted it to be, and perhaps my hopes were too high, because I was 100% disappointed. I don't know if it was trying too hard, or not trying hard enough. I'm as much a fan of B horror/sci-fi as anyone, but I'm not entirely sure that's what it was going for....and even if it was, it wasn't done well.

A couple of chuckles: when one of the zombies holding its phone was searching for WiFi (ha, people are zombies! see what they did there? 😐), and when they showed that Adam Driver's character's key chain was a ship from Star Wars.

My recommendation? Skip it.

Generally speaking, I'm not really a fan of Zombies (or the undead), in either movies or in games in which they are the main antagonist.

Which is probably why I gave this a miss when it was first released, only picking it up when it was released on PS Plus.

(Yes, I know the Freakers are never called Zombies but, let's face it, that's what they really are).

I have to say that, while slow starting, the story in this open world game was actually quite enjoyable, with Sam Witwer doing a particularly fine job as the protaganist Deacon St John, the former outlaw biker who you play as in this post apocalyptic world.

Freaker horde missions, though? Not a fan.

(I preferred sneaking around, or the occasional gunfight)

I had heard this game was like Minecraft for adults with scarier zombies and they were certainly... not wrong. It's an adventure game where you must survive in a post apocalyptic wasteland with nothing but your wits to begin. You must craft items and loot everything you encounter, all while avoiding (or seeking out) zombies. There are quite a few things about this game that I enjoy and think makes it unique.

First, it's open world (sort of, you do have a huge map you can explore, but there are limits). It is a massive world where you must discover or build your own place of residence or loot cities, avoid toxic air environments, try not to freeze to death in the snow lands, die of heat in the deserts, among other things.

The one thing that makes it unique is that every 7 days, massive hordes of zombies (growing in size every additional 7 days) rush you to try and kill you. You better fortify your base or you won't last long.

Overall, I'm still addicted to this game a month after purchase. It still creeps me out and provides entertainment,.

Highly original take on the tired zombie genre (0 more)
Zombies on a train!
Taking the very simple concept of ‘zombies on a train’, this isn’t just one of the best zombie movies I’ve ever seen, it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in recent years – period!

This South Korean movie doesn’t waste much time in setting the scene – a banker agrees to take his daughter by train to visit her mother in Busan. But as the train pulls out of the station, a zombie epidemic breaks out. And the last person to rush through the closing train doors appears to be a little bit unwell…

The epidemic quickly spreads throughout the train and those who are left must act quickly to seal off the carriages and try to work out how to make it to their loved ones who they’ve become separated from in other carriages. Like 28 days later, or World War Z, our zombies move quickly and aren’t afraid to climb all over each other in their ravenous pursuit of the living, piling themselves up against glass walls and doors in order to break through, then continuing to chase with broken, contorted limbs. In an interesting twist though, these zombies work on their sense of sight a lot more than smell or hearing, something which works to the advantage of the living as the train rockets through dark tunnels for minutes at a time.

As the living quickly start dwindling in numbers, we’re left with a pretty good and varied selection of characters. Among them – our hero and his young daughter, a man and his pregnant wife, a bunch of high school kids, a couple of elderly sisters and a selfish businessman who’s out for himself. After a brief stop at a supposedly safe station turns out to be overrun by hordes of zombies, the survivors barely make it back onto the train and continue on their way to Busan, rumoured to be a safe haven.

Aside from the highly enjoyable zombie action, there’s plenty of human emotion and sadness, along with some great performances from all involved. This is a highly innovative and serious enjoyable thrill ride and I cannot recommend it enough.

Another game to film failure. I've not played the games which involves killing zombies in creative ways. Some short sections of the film are true to this. However overall it has a cheap made for TV feel to it. Should have gone more for a comedy horror angle.

Definitely wouldn’t consider this a horror movie at all, are there zombies? Yeah. Do some people die? Yeah. But it’s not a horror movie, a satire? Sure. Adam Driver and Bill Murray were great, you’ll definitely get some good laughs from the script and how it’s all played out. Would watch it again for sure.
