I was lucky enough to see the version that had Sir Patrick Stewart and David Tennant in lead roles, live at Stratford. Sir Patrick was quite difficult to hear at times but David, especially when he got to 'mad Hamlet', stole the stage with his energy. The actor that played Polonius (sorry can't remember who it was) was also excellent.

"Gary Oldman must rank as one of or—in my opinion—the most talented actor of his generation. Here, as per normal, he is intoxicating, as Sid Vicious, the “bass player” for the Sex Pistols. England in the ’80s. Drugs. Music. Fashion and baked beans. What’s not to love? Blink and you will miss Shane MacGowan from the Pogues, and Courtney Love."

Doesn't fit with the characters

Parts of this film just dont sit with how the characters act not only due to an actor switch but how a character deals with situations doesn't fit with their motives in the previous film. Its only saving grace is the overal plot makes sense.
