David McK (3204 KP) rated Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) in Movies
Jan 18, 2024
More or less direct sequel to the first Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes movie, that again continues the unfortunate trend of an over-reliance of slow motion scenes, and slapstick based around Holmes being in disguise.
Better than the first, yes, but nowhere near as good as the BBC Benedict Cumberbatch adaptations, or even of NBCs Elementary.

Before Blade (1998), superhero movies were always trying to ice skate uphill. 20th Anniversary Review
Twenty years before “Black Panther”, Marvel partnered with New Line to release a black-led superhero movie which would see them help kick-start the current superhero boom as well as changing the course of their movie adaptations to that point...

JUMPCUT ONLINE (77 KP) rated Horrible Histories: The Movie (2019) in Movies
Aug 6, 2019
While it’s all silly observational gags and short musical numbers, something the TV adaptations thrived on for a shorter run time, you can’t help feel this soon runs out of movie material and limps along, back and forth from character to character trying to squeeze as much comedy as they can from their scenes.

Suswatibasu (1701 KP) rated The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories in Books
Oct 31, 2017
Very different to subsequent adaptations
The tale of Sleepy Hollow is infamous with many versions derived from this short story. However, subsequent adaptations portray protagonist Ichabod Crane as a hero and not a victim of the headless horseman. While he's not a victim in the murder-sense, being driven away from Sleepy Hollow does seem unlike the valiant lawman, as seen in the Tim Burton film.
In this, Crane is a simple teacher with wide-ranging beliefs and clearly a big appetite. Most of the characters are the same but there are no intriguing plots of control over the Hessian headless horseman.
It's a straight forward rural legend about a bloodthirsty war hero who continues to haunt the town. Although even this is questionable as seen in the last part of the story. Nevertheless, it's still a classic and I'm sure many more versions will be created in the future.

Amazing Whirlwind Ride From Start to End
Contains spoilers, click to show
This is one of the most honestly thrill seeking adaptations I have seen for a long time. I am a big lover of original novel based stories and when these stories are made into on screen adaptations, it is easy for things to go terribly wrong and the story to become lost within flashy CGI ect. This is one of the best TV shows I have watched for a long time, to be honest I binged watch it within 3 days. The crew and cast of 'The Haunting of Hill House' created a modern day masterpiece whilst staying true to the original paper back.

Shakespeare fun
Writer/director/star Kenneth Branagh brings one of his several Shakespeare adaptations to the big screen with a very memorable cast including Denzel Washington, Emma Thompson, Michael Keaton and a very young Kate Beckinsale.
If you like old English you will love the comedy, mistaken identity with a little tragedy. This one is not too heavy and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Erika (17788 KP) rated Witness for the Prosecution in TV
Jan 20, 2019 (Updated Jan 20, 2019)
Do not compare this to the original.
Watching the original Witness for the Prosecution (1957), I remember being genuinely shocked by that twist, because it came out of nowhere. This film just didn't build the story up to
This adaptation is alright, it's nothing to write home about. There were too many shots of Toby Jones walking through allies or in his dungeon-like office. I felt like this went on too long, and the added length didn't necessarily add anything to the story.
I feel like with a lot of these modern adaptations of Christie's novels, they're tending to insert sex scenes when they're genuinely aren't needed and just slow up the story. It actually makes it hard for me to suggest the new adaptations to my mother, who hates when Christie's work is altered in that particular way.
Skip this one, and watch the original film with Tyrone Powers and Marlene Dietrich.

Suswatibasu (1701 KP) rated A Christmas Carol in Books
Oct 10, 2017 (Updated Oct 10, 2017)
The only Christmas story
There have been hundreds of adaptations of this book, and yet this will be the only classic version. It is the original redemption novella. The treatment of the poor and the ability of a self-interested man absolving himself by transforming into a more sympathetic character are the key themes of the story. With A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens captured the essence of the mid-Victorian revival of the Christmas holiday.
Andy K (10821 KP) rated Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) in Movies
Dec 14, 2017
The Clone Wars movie was basically just an extension of the TV series which I didn't watch much of, but it was decent. It makes me wonder if other Star Wars TV movies would do well.
I would love to see animated adaptations of the Timothy Zahn novels, but that probably will not happen.
This Clone Wars film can still be enjoyed by Star Wars fans young and old.
