"It’s so beautifully real and melancholy; I just go back to it, night and day. I’m late to the game for enjoying all of her past work but now I’m a solid fan, in for life. The way the whole album plays together is exactly what I love about albums. She shares a perfect window into a season of her life, and you get to feel intimately close to her headspace at that time."

"I bought it when I was eight in John Menzies in Edinburgh using a record token I'd got for Christmas. ""Madness were this really exciting band who mademe want to jump around. It's stood the test of time and is still a great record. ""It felt great to own my first album and was a responsibility too. Before then I'd only had a bunch of 7in singles and an old Dansette record player."

"This album was introduced to me by John Legend who actually played the title song for me while we were writing—he played it on the piano and sang it at first. It was so striking, I said, 'What is that?" And then he played me the actual record and it instantly became a favorite for me. The way her voice breaks is so moving. She totally caught pure honesty and that's inspiring."

"If I had to choose just one Wilco album to own this would be it if I could only be it. As consistently good as they are, there is something undeniably unique about this record. The song writing it beautiful but the production is what takes it over the top. Handled differently the record would be simply a fantastic indie folk record, but the strangely textured recording raises it up to become something entirely other."

"Even though his music isn’t a huge influence on Vampire Weekend, I’d say Expensive Shit was probably the first African record I listened to a lot. In my early teens, I was into punk rock, and looking at the album cover, it fit in with that aesthetic. I learned the backstory about Fela getting busted for drugs. It was my introduction not only to the music, but also to the political situation."
