David McK (3562 KP) rated It Came From On High in Books
Jan 30, 2019
Merging sci-fi with religion might seem an odd combination, but this novel takes the approach what would happen if the Vatican had proof of extraterrestrial life, with that proof coming in the shape of two eloping aliens who have crash-landed in a small island of the coast of Ireland, just in time for the new Pope's Easter address when he is stumped for ideas.
While it raised a few smiles, it also unfortunately never really raised a chuckle or any deep profound thoughts: this, I found, to be the type of book to read, enjoy, and move on.

David McK (3562 KP) rated Invincible (The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier, #2) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
The second book in 'The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier' spin-off from 'The Lost Fleet' series, with most of the same characters (so, in a way, the 7th book in the series).
Whereas the previous book primarily concerned the outbound portion of their mission (to investigate the extent of enigma - aliens discovered in the 'original' series - space), in this the fleet starts its journey home with the novel picking up almost directly from the end of that previous story.
They also don't (yet) make it all the way home - have to leave room for the next entry in the series, after all!

Dean (6927 KP) rated The Darkest Hour (2011) in Movies

Another film to file under "The trailer made it look good". In truth the idea wasn't so bad, a different version to War of the worlds would be one way to describe it. It had big ideas but unfortunately the CGI and acting didn't match the ambition. Some of the CGI for the aliens later on look more like an old Xbox game, and not on the 360! The story and script start to turn rather silly half way through. It made Skyline look rather good. Although it was nice to see Rachael Taylor back in a main stream film.

LeftSideCut (3776 KP) rated Species III (2004) in Movies

Some dude - "We need to just take a quick blood test from you"
Alien lady - *immediately removes all clothes so this can happen*
This sums up Species III - It's taken what little formula there was from the first two, and just added more boobs, and still, and this is important, it's quite possibly the most boring film I've ever watched.
Dull characters, dull gore, dull editing, dull script.
Also, the aliens look way worse than in Species II, and I just generally hated this film.
Unfortunately, the completionist in me is compelled to watch Species IV. Yay?

David McK (3562 KP) rated Alien: Romulus (2024) in Movies
Aug 17, 2024 (Updated Aug 17, 2024)
Newest (at the time of writing) entry in the increasingly-expanding 'Alien' universe, with this particular entry set between the events of the original 'Alien' and its sequel 'Aliens'.
So between the two best entries in the franchise, in other words.
I found it also heavily dependant upon those movies, with several call-backs and references made to those (and even to the much-maligned 'Alien; Resurrection' and to 'Prometheus'); almost a case of 'pick the best bits and mash them together' in several parts.
Enjoyable enough, yes, but - to me - it doesn't reach the heights of the earlier entries.

David McK (3562 KP) rated Predator: If It Bleeds in Books
Jan 30, 2019
Towards the end of 2017/at the start of 2018 I picked up both this and [b: Aliens: Bug Hunt|31416104|Aliens Bug Hunt|Jonathan Maberry|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1474300660s/31416104.jpg|52265710], as I'd always had a soft spot for both those films.
Both as sci-fi anthologies; both are based around their respective properties.
I read the latter first, and (truth be told) wasn't overly impressed: while there were some good stories amongst those included, none really stood out all that much.
As a result, I put off reading this until I worked my way through some 'proper' novels, and only came back to this relatively recently.
Thankfully, of the two anthologies, I found this to be the better (despite a somewhat ropey start). I think that may be due to the central conceit of the Predators: as (effectively) alien Big Game hunters, that allows these stories to be set at any point throughout human history, not 'tied down' to the future as the Alien stories are.
That's a concept put into full use in this, with stories that run the gamut from the traditional sci-fi setting of the future, to the American Civil War, to the Wild West, to feudal Japan, to present-day Third World countries and to pretty much every point in-between!

Rodney Barnes (472 KP) rated The Guyver (1991) in Movies
Dec 23, 2019 (Updated Dec 23, 2019)
Corny Sci fi fun
Contains spoilers, click to show
The Guyver....based on a manga with the same same. The bio booster armor. This is nothing more than a B movie. Loosely based on the manga. The movie has it as creation of a corporation called Chronos. A researcher is killed and his daughter and boyfriend suspect he was murdered. CIA agent Max Reed (Mark Hamill) gets involved. The boyfriend finds the armor and that is where the fun begins. The CEO of Chronos Fulton Balcus, who is actually an alien himself, sends out his alien hordes to get the Guyver back. The Guyver attaches itself to Sean and he becomes a superpowered armored hero who now can match the aliens in combat. The dialogue and banter is really funny and corny at times. One of the voices for the aliens in non other than Jimmy Walker...you know JJ from Goodtimes. Sean is defeated the first time around by the alien foes, but with the kidnapping of his girlfriend and the death of Max( yes Mark Hamill diesðŸ˜) he gets it together and defeats the hordes of Balcus. Then he faces off against and defeats Balcus himself. All in all, this movie is fun. If you like sci fi action hero type movies, you will like The Guyver
