This book is filled with mystery, magic, and incomprehensable events that never fully resolve themselves but still leave you feeling resolved at the end. It plays with concepts I don’t see often in YA, and doesn’t shy away from hard questions. There is some questionable content, so I wouldn’t recommend it to all ages. But I am totally adding Dawn Kurtagich to my Author Watch list and hope you will too!
I don’t want to say too much about the story itself because I don’t want to spoil it. I requested the book, forgot about it, and then picked it at random having absolutely no idea what it was about. Suffice to say I was completely enthralled and enjoyed every moment of it. I can’t stress this enough: GO GET A COPY OF THIS BOOK IMEDIATELY. Audio, print, e-book, whatever. You will not be sorry.
Content/recommendation: some language, some sex, some violence. Most of the violence is mental torture the main character endures. Some witch-craft. Ages 16+.

First, he used his own name as the name of the main character. I'm not sure if he did this to allow for getting into the characters head, or if he just couldn't think of anything else at the time and then forgot to change it later, but it was strange and somewhat distracting.
Second, Although it was exciting and interesting, it certainly didn't have me sitting on the edge of my seat, anxiously awaiting the next word. I was too busy thinking and trying to figure out what the hell was going on.
Third, the writing wasn't bad, but again, it was odd. I really don't know how else to describe it. Maybe it's an acquired taste… if you can acquire tastes for writing voices.
I liked the characters, the plot was good, and it worked itself out well in the end with just enough of a cliffhanger to make me curious about the next book, but honestly, I probably won't be waiting outside Books-a-Million at midnight waiting for the release.
Content/Recommendation: Clean, ages 14-adult

Parasite is pretty self-explanatory if you go by its name. It deals with… well, parasites. The characters are a little stereotypish – okay, really they are a lot. There’s that whole super villain monologue thing going on that irks the hell out of me. Fortunately, the plot more than makes up for it. This is the first book I’ve listened to/read by Mira Grant, so I can’t really compare it to Newsflesh, which is on my to-read list.
Aside from griping about the villains, there’s not a whole lot for me to complain about here. It’s nice to see more than just two factions when the world is ending; in fact, it’s nice to see a series that’s not about zombies taking off at the beginning of the apocalypse where there’s still a chance for humankind. Maybe.
Seriously, it’s a pretty solid book. Gonna knock off a skull for the villain speeches though.
