This book was a delight and a surprise to read! One that I couldn’t wait to finish but at the same time didn’t want to finish as it would mean the end of the story.

We follow Alice, who at 18 has run away to New York, following in her mothers footsteps. We know from the start that Alice has been murdered, but we don’t know why and by who, and we are kept guessing for the majority of the book. We also follow Ruby, who has run away from her life in Australia because of an affair she had with a man that is soon to be married. Both of their stories intertwine, and for a while you can’t tell why… until Alice’s body is found my Ruby on a morning jog. After that, Ruby feels the need to ensure that Alice’s murderer comes to justice and ends up making a few friends along the way.

The story is told by Alice (or her spirit as we come to realise) and is so beautifully written that it doesn’t become confusing switching between the parallels of the two women’s lives. Some of the turn of phrases are so beautiful that I could read Jacqueline Bublitz’s writing forever and not get bored. Her descriptions make you feel like you are experiencing the exact moment or looking at the exact same building and the emotions are described so wonderfully that you feel them too.

It is so rare to find a book that focuses on the victim of a crime instead of the perpetrator, and even in every day life the same is true. This book makes you wonder why we can’t focus on the person outside of being a victim and only focus on the perpetrator when it comes to being brought to justice.

I want to thank Jacqueline Bublitz and Pigeonhole for allowing me to read this book and I look forward to reading Jacqueline’s next book!

a great step out of my comfort zone!
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

A step out of my comfort zone, but a very welcome one!

Jack is from London, but has relocated clear across the globe after *something* happened. He and his partner are now tasked with finding out where the missing MMA fighter is, and who killed the trainer.

Jack is. . .interesting! He's not a perfect detective, not by any means, but I think, in his own way, his heart is in the right place. In JACK's right place, you know? Lots of hints and clues and titbits abotu what happened in London to send him running to Australia, but I didn't get the FULL picture, not really. And I really really want it! I think, this might be the only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars, was because I wasn't putting the clues and hints together well enough.

Oh, wait, no. there was another point I want to make. Claudia, Jack's partner, gets a chapter. Just the one. And I wanted more of her, or none of her. that one chapter had my hopes up of a dual point of view, and it's not, not really. One chapter is a tease! So in future books, can we have MORE Claudia, please??

The case of the MMA fighter and missing trainer is well laid out, and I wasn't sure which way it was gonna go til the end, so I was fully engaged and kept on my toes. Thoroughly kept on my toes, if I'm honest and that's a rare thing these days!

This is a step out of my comfort zone, I tend to mostly stick to romance of some description, so the blurb most have grabbed something at me for me to request it. I have not a clue what that was, but I'm very pleased it did.

I'd like to follow Jack and Claudia, they are good together!

4 good solid stars

Well this is a backburner book (#1 on my to-read on Goodreads), having been on my Kindle since some time in January 2014 when it was released. I think I've put off reading it simply because of the "erotica" label it had on Goodreads. It wasn't exactly erotica, though. Yeah, they had quite a lot of sex but there was a romance to it, too.

So this starts with Laurelyn arriving in Australia with her best friend to spend time with her best friends brother for three months as he studies wine making there. On the first night they head out to a bar and take part in an...open mic night? Laurelyn sings and plays the guitar (I think) and attracts the attention of Jack, a man looking for his next lover. Instead of the usual week/month, he plans to spend three months with his next bed fellow, giving her whatever she wishes for and making her feel special. Laurelyn catches his attention and he plans to seduce her into agreeing to his arrangement.

I guess if I was on the receiving end of an attractive rich guy wanting to spend three months with me, getting to know me and spending a lot of that time in bed, I'd enjoy it, too, but I have to admit I got a little bored with this. It was taking a little too long to get where it was going and I skipped entire sex scenes. The books 271 pages felt more like 500.

It had a rather promising start, apart from the slightly stalkerish behaviour of Jack as he tried to meet Laurelyn again, and I enjoyed the slow seduction and how he treated her. But then I didn't really see the relationship grow as such. It didn't work for me, personally.

By the end, I wasn't all that bothered about what was going to happen next with the characters so I won't be continuing the series.
