Destroy All Monsters (1968)
Destroy All Monsters (1968)
1968 | Sci-Fi
Ninth Godzilla movie earns an extra point just for sheer chutzpah. A bit like a monster version of The Expendables, but with better acting. In the distant future of 1999, aliens take over monster version of wildlife preserve, set about causing mischief in the great cities of Earth.

The utter gravity of the performances when coupled to the completely preposterous plot results in a movie which it is almost impossible to take seriously: there is the odd sign even the original film-makers had their tongues in their cheeks. Still, it has all your favourite monsters in the same movie (even in the same scene, most likely), although the prominence of the different characters depends more on what state the monster suit is in than their actual fame. Film-makers arguably missed a trick in making the climactic monster battle more of a mugging than a grand melee, but you can't have everything. Ridiculous, awesome: awesomely ridiculous, ridiculously awesome.

Design is awesome (2 more)
Mechanics are fun and easy to teach
Mechanics have lots of replayability
Stories can get repetitive (0 more)
Above and Below is a great introductory game to adventure mechanics. Nothing in the game is difficult, and players can feel accomplished, even in their first game. But there is also enough variety to allow for great replay ability and to still keep the game interesting for experienced tabletop players.

And oh man, is the design awesome. You'll be amazed at the level of detail that went in to the cartoony graphic design.

Ultimately, the biggest downfall is the lack of adventure stories. You might think I'm crazy, because there are 208. But in just a few games, we managed to replay quite a few stories. This is less than ideal, because not knowing the outcomes of the stories is integral to the gameplay. Perhaps this is something that the expansions fix, but I have not played them.

Kenan Thompson recommended Casino (1995) in Movies (curated)

Casino (1995)
Casino (1995)

"That’s another perfect movie in my opinion. It’s like all those dudes in there — the height of their abilities. I wish I could name six because I would put Training Day up there. That’s Denzel at his most, most confident. It’s an awesome movie to watch. But, Casino is just classic like, Goodfellas, and then Raging Bull and all of those things coming are like little seeds, and the flower that sprouts was Casino. Scorsese and all those dudes really knowing each other for years. Putting together an awesome story about the beginning of Las Vegas or the last time the mob controlled Las Vegas — was just a great story and then to execute it for two and a half hours like that from top to bottom. It’s like some of Joe Pesci‘s finest work ever — Goodfellas is, like, his greatest film. Both of those dudes — De Niro‘s got so many great ones. [But] for those dudes together, I think Casino‘s my favorite."
