Don't underestimate..
Finally checked this out after all the Oscar wins and nominations. Spotted it on Netflix a while ago but the trailer didn't grab me.
While set as a Western, shot in an awesome location in New Zealand, it's more of a character piece. No gun blazing here. It's the end of the Wild West era 1925 with Horses giving way to cars. A rancher and his brother are on a cattle drive. They meet a window and her young awkward son. Soon she marries the gentlemanly brother and moves to the ranch. Where they are tormented by Benendict Cumberbatch's character. At his awesome best in a more different role for him as a complex bully, mancho man exterior with a hidden depth to him.
Definitely an intellectual film with many layers and aspects to it. A lot of questions hinted at for the viewer to fill in the blanks. By the end it's a simple story told very intricately. Some great actors and beautiful photography, this will hold up well to repeat viewings.
It is very slow going to the payoff at the end and isn't the sort of film that will appeal to everyone. If you appreciate good acting and storytelling though check it out.

Another awesome Stephen King book
I enjoy this book because even though the whole premise of someone who wakes up after being in a coma and finds they are psychic is a bit far fetched.

I found that the bits about Johnny and his mum were a bit long winded compared to the film but in general I thought it was a great film.

Possibly I should have read the book first as the differences between the two did jar a bit. Overall the majority of the film was true to the novel.

Amazing Cast
I must say after listening to the soundtrack on repeat for at least two days I was slightly worried that the film wouldn't live up to the music but it was absolutely amazing! I loved every second and was not bored once. The storyline was just as amazing as the soundtrack and I must say that the soundtrack and story fitted together incredibly well. The dance numbers and stunts were awesome. And I'll be honest when I say I never wanted it to end. Definitely one I will be re-watching a lot. One of my favourite films of 2017 by far!

While I didn't care for the story itself (admittedly, I knew very little of Cromwell going into this) I did enjoy the character moments that came out of this. Hex continues to grow on me, and Ace continues to be awesome, here acting more as the emotional anchor for Hex than her usual bombastic force of nature. It was somewhat surprising to hear Sophie Aldred utter the line "when I was a teenager" in reference to traveling with the Doctor, and realize just how much time has passed in universe with them together. The Seventh Doctor also gets some great moments to shine as well. For a full review, visit www.travelingthevortex.com
