Jarom Solar Norris (177 KP) rated Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) in Movies
Feb 13, 2019
What’s not to like about Queen? Bohemian Rhapsody does an excellent job of telling a dramatic history of the band and its forerunner, Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek does an excellent performance. Parts of the movie are like watching a hilarious “How It’s Made” video of some of the best music of the century, parts of it are literally just watching concerts and listening to awesome music. Most importantly, there’s the story of Mercury’s evolution, which is a story arc any writer could only dream of: a British-Indian man abandoning his heritage, struggling to balance love for a woman with being gay, being manipulated by a manager turned lover, being scrutinized by the media, and eventually being able to be comfortable with who he is, all the while using his talent to push the band to create more and more musical innovations. It’s so good.

Sassy Brit (97 KP) rated Moxie: A Novel in Books

Jennifer Mathieu has written a strong book featuring a quiet girl, Vivian and her aversion to bullies. One day Viv, cannot put up with it anymore and takes it upon herself to make a stand, starting with a ‘zine she creates herself and distributes anonymously. It’s a small step with a big effect, because it doesn’t take long for things to snowball and soon Moxie becomes an empowering voice to be heard! And I’m not just saying fictional characters here. Every young girl should read this awesome, inspiring and captivating read!
Good for all of you who love the whole ‘girl power’ attitude, and like books which inspire and encourage you in real life to be the person you should be and stand up for yourself. For fledgling feminists everywhere! A fast-paced, bad-ass read full of action and great characterisation. Join the Moxie Movement! Have your say!

Dana (24 KP) rated Salem's Lot in Books

I have not read too much by Stephen King, but I do consider him a great author. This book, in drawing inspiration from Bram Stoker's Dracula (which I didn't know until I read the forward of the book) is an excellent read! Like all of his books, there was the overarching creepy vibe to the setting and the characters. I didn't really trust any of them at any point in the story, which I think is the point. There is no reliable narrator in this.
It was cool to see the allusions to Dracula, the almost letter writing style was awesome because it comes directly from the source.
This book begs the question of what would happen if Dracula took place in a modern day town of middle America and answers that question well. I can't wait to pick up another book by Stephen King!

I have wanted to read this book since it was published. I'm in charge of the teens section at the bookstore that I worked at and I fell in love with the cover. I have been pretty excited to see that this book has been on the teen best sellers list since its publication and it definitely didn't disappoint.
The characters were really awesome. I could relate to the characters and I was definitely rooting them on. I loved how flushed out the characters were and the insecurities that presented themselves.
The plot was definitely fun. I loved how many twists and turns there were and was not able to guess what was going to happen next (which is usually the case with young adult books).
Ultimately, this book was amazing and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Young Adult fantasy books.

Have you seen the lawnmower scene? Gruesome!
Before Peter Jackson became the mega-awesome A-list director he is today, he made several small films in New Zealand including this one.
When a poisonous rat monkey gets brought to the mainland, its lethal bite causes mayhem in a young man's life. He know has to deal with the growing weirdness at his house while he pursues the girl of his dreams.
Saying this movie is over the top is one of the largest understatements of all time. If you combine Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead and The Toxic Avenger you still wouldn't come close to the campy goodness of this film.
The gore is definitely extreme, but very cheeky and comical. The demon baby is also especially hilarious.
If you ask me nicely, you can come to my house and watch this with me!

I found this read to be very thrilling and action-packed. I was worried it would be a lot of "filler" stuff to make the read longer, but I was pleasantly suprised to find each chapter riveting. I found myself wondering what would happen next in Nora and Patch's story when I was away working or someplace I wasn't able to continue reading. It was unbelievably hard to set this book down. I cannot wait for the next installment! I have already pre-ordered it and cannot wait for it to get here so I can see what happens next!
The entire series or "saga" is a magnificent piece of work. I found the story to be inspiring and it held a great many of life's lessons within it. I really enjoy when a fiction or fanrasy writers incorporate meaning and intertwine it throughout their books.
Absolutely awesome.

Amazing game
Ok, I have never played this game myself but I have watched it being played. I know that's not quite the same thing but I'll take what I can get. Anyway, not flat out scary but definitely creepy enough to keep even big gamers interested. It has a strong plot with unexpected twists all over the place. Once the game is over there are still so many theories as to what happened because the developers did such an awesome job of layering on just enough facts to get people thinking.
The artwork reminds me of Betty Boop meets Steam Boat Willie (not sure is I should know those references but hey I grew up with oldies lol). Even the music and the way the characters move look like an older cartoon. Can't say anything about the controls but I still find myself in love with this game.

Russ Troutt (291 KP) rated Sing Street (2016) in Movies

Put on your makeup and dancing shoes for one of the best movies of 2016, Sing Street. With music from The Cure, the enjoyment of this movie is pure. It features some Duran Duran, gotta give the creators of Sing Street a hand. Not only does it have music from, but also will make you say A-Ha. I'm telling you it's a huge smash, it even includes awesome tunes from The Clash. With music from Hall & Oates, it will make you want to chase big dreams in a small boat. You'll get to hear Spandau Ballet, it'll leave you wanting to party all night and dance all day. After this review you might think I'm a ham, but give it a watch and you will even get to hear The Jam. Now it's time to get up on your feet for the best band of the year, Sing Street!
