"Beach House are one of the best bands around right now. Victoria Legrand's voice has all the character of someone great like Nico but her voice is actually vaster and more beautifully skilled. It's better than Nico – and I'm not knocking Nico. Alex Scally's guitar is a subtle, refined style that I'm going to compare to Joey Santiago and the Pixies or John Fahey. It's where someone takes a not necessarily very complex finger picking pattern but has such an interesting melodic approach that what they hold back becomes so powerful. It's minimal but there is so much information in it. The ideas on this record are so crystalized. They're both so smart and so talented yet laid back, that they let you feel like it's a laid back relaxed and chill concise statement but there's actually so much intellect and nuance in the performance that it's flawless. The opening song 'Zebra' is one of the best songs I've ever heard. It's on another level. I always wanted to hear Victoria sing 'A Whole New World' from my Aladdin film, I think she'd do it really well."

"To find some stuff [for the reissue] I was opening the laptop that I made Nights Out on. When I finished that record the laptop was full so I closed it and put it away. When I was delving back in time I looked at my iTunes and I listened back to this album and suddenly realised that I know all of it really well! I think my girlfriend at the time was really into them, and she put them on and I thought ‘well I don’t like this at all’. I remember listening to his voice and thinking ‘I fucking hate this guy’s voice’, and then after not very long realising that I liked that he was owning his lisp and I started finding it exciting. I must have listened to that record way more than I realised because I know it all really well! When I was listening to it again after I opened up that old computer and for the first time I heard it as a record that definitely influenced a lot of more recent alt-rock bands. There’s a proper disco-y track in there, and it’s sprawling, there’s interludes… it’s a good record!"

"I’ll start with This is Spinal Tap. It sort of took an American perspective to show the characters and the attitudes surrounding British rock bands in the 1970s and 1980s, which, I guess, was what it was supposed to be, and I just thought the characters drawn were so excellent. And yet, it was odd, because everyone involved was American. You’d think it’d be just the kind of thing that some British writers or comedians could’ve done better, but clearly we didn’t. And I thought Christopher Guest, et al., did it fantastically well. It’s just always a kind of reassuringly funny film. The best comedy is watching humans interact, and people with their own petty ambitions, and self delusions, and all that sort of stuff. And that movie is absolutely brim full of it. If they say that comedy is essentially exaggerated truth, that was almost the perfect exemplar of it, where it’s almost a documentary. Well, it is obviously a mockumentary, but you don’t have to exaggerate much for it to become inherently comic. So that’s kind of what it is. It’s a perfect exaggeration, but exaggerated not very much."

"I prefer Metal Box, but this is a wonderful album and it just shows you where Lydon was culturally at that point in time. And he was obviously a bright fella. In interviews he was always talking about bands like Hawkwind and Can, so you always knew he was going to come from the left field, but the album didn't sound like anything else. I mean, Wobble's bass, Donut [Jim Walker]'s drumming, Keith Levene's guitar. I saw them play and Keith Levene had that metal guitar and he broke string after string during every song, Wobble was just sat down, and the whole thing just captured the bedlam but it just wasn't delivering what people were expecting. If you listen to 'Religion', it is just so cutting and stark and amazing; he channelled all of the anger that he had in a way that he couldn't with the Pistols because he wasn't being manipulated. He was cynical by this point because of the way he'd been treated and all the bullshit, and it all came out on this album. It was a game changer, this album."
