Objectively, I feel the book deserves 4 stars, but gr ratings are supposed to be based on your enjoyment, which was a 1 or 2 for me.

I’ve read other books featuring mental illness, the aftermath of atomic bombs, self harm, abuse. I don’t know why I felt so repulsed by this one, but I did. It isn’t a bad book-it’s very good actually, but I hated it.

This was an ARC I received in a giveaway. (Not via goodreads)

I quite enjoyed Nightmare Alley, it's not your usual Del Toro movie, so don't be expecting the strange creatures we have cone to know him for. I vaguely remember the 1947 version of the film of the book that it's based on, so I couldn't give a comparison to that or the book, but this version has a great cast and some nice cinematography.

Worth checking out if you want to step away from the Hollywood action blockbusters for a brief moment 😉

Forensic Shakespeare

Forensic doesn't mean this is the Shakespeare equivalent of Silent Witness - this is a book looking at a group of Shakespeare's plays (and one poem), of which several are often considered 'problem' plays and the use of rhetoric within them. Skinner argues that this is deliberate and relates to a re-emerging interest in the Roman Rhetoricians in the Tudor period. The book is based on a series of lectures given by Skinner, so although as a casual reader I found it interesting, it was also hard work at times, particularly the opening chapters.

"I never saw the movie with Denzel Washington, but the book [on which it is based] is incredible. It's about a boxer who is a hometown hero in New Jersey because he went to juvie, then the army, made it big as a pro and then was wrongly accused of a triple murder. It's kind of inspiring - and it makes me think, "Man, what have I really done?""

"I had the great honor of being at a screening of the restored print in Los Angeles some years ago. I think this is Bertolucci’s masterpiece, though one could argue he made several of them. Ravishingly beautiful visuals, terrific performances, and among the most liquid and complex camerawork ever. A study of fascism, based on the book by Alberto Moravia."
