The main character, a Chosen One, misses out on her calling because of a drug addiction. There’s also great deprivation because of the social hierarchy in this world. It’s a caste system based on the colour of a persons blood.
There are themes of oppression, class, division, poverty and addiction. There’s a Trans main character (and others besides), and this isn’t a society that is prejudiced against LGBTQ+ people, in fact there’s support for those who want to transition. Women hold positions of great power in government and on the battlefield - and they’re just as able as their male counterparts. Often better.
This is a chunky book and a fast read regardless of that. I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

I set myself a target of 15 books in a year and I'm on target to get there. Its interesting to see other people's ratings of the books I've read and rewarding to see the bar creep up.
As well as the challenge bar the progress bar for each book has been essential for motivating me to pick a book back up.. And maybe its just me, but I don't like to record a book as read if I haven't finished it. Not read any real howlers this year though.
All and all a great app. Helps me remember what I've read for more than 5 seconds as well.

It’s spooky, weird and wonderful - horror at its heart! I loved how this incorporeal being is able to take over humans minds and bodies, driving them mad. Extra-terrestrial or spiritual/ demonic? Who knows, and I hope we don’t find out because it makes it that much more terrifying.
It’s a really tense, frightening book, and I loved it.
