Martin Lakin (278 KP) rated Avengers: Endgame (2019) in Movies

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from start to finish, an emotional rollercoaster that I think was the best way to culminate a 22 movie comic book arc.
This film had everything, all the Marvel characters you know and love, a homage to the past films, a cap Vs cap showdown and a battle the likes of which has never been seen.
Even though it is a film I desperately want to see again and again I did downgrade it from full marks as there are plot holes, especially as they are so careful not to mess with the time line, even though the final battle does mess with the timeline completely. Unless there is something that can later be explained.
Overall, I laughed, I cried and I was fully entertained with this movie and would recommend to anyone as long as they have seen the earlier marvel releases.
To conclude I love Avengers: Endgame 3000!

Amazing battle scenes
Another high octane, bloody, brutal action film from the guys who gave us Crank. A real mix-match of several ideas thrown in the blender together from Running Man, eXistenZ, Death Race and games like The Sims and Gears of War. So very low on originality but still a cool idea taken a step further. Two games dominate the future world where virtual reality enables the Player to control another human being. In the Society (Sims) game things take on a weird and sexual nature. In the other game Slayers, death row prisoners can earn freedom if they manage to survive 30 missions. The battle scenes are amazing and you feel like you are there right in the middle of it, not just viewing from the sidelines. Quite violent and over the top like the Crank films. If you like those types of films, games mentioned you should like this.
Ross (3284 KP) rated Aquaman (2018) in Movies
Jan 4, 2019
By far and away, this is the best of the recent DC movies (though I haven't seen Wonder Woman). There is much more humour injected into it, that it finally feels like they've got something to rival Marvel films. It really feels like a normal, decent superhero film.
However, I didn't much like Jason Momoa and thought he lacked the personality to carry the role off and really needed Amber Heard to inject some life into scenes.
A fun enjoyable film but I'm not sure the final battle scene was necessary - why does every superhero film have to lead up to an epic battle these days? While the CGI made this visually stunning, I felt it was totally unnecessary.
And finally, I was so glad when Aquaman's mum's "trident" is broken in the initial challenge for the throne - it had 5 prongs so every time someone referred to it as a trident I wanted to scream.

David McK (3801 KP) rated Hunting the Eagles: 2: Eagles of Rome in Books

I actually read this in a busy period, as a sort of on-again-off-again kind of deal amongst a couple of other (shorter, less involved) novels.
This is the second in Ben Kane's 'Eagles of Rome' series, that deals with - in the first novel (Eagles at War) perhaps Rome's most famous defeat of all: that which led (according to legend) the Emperor Augustus Caesar to cry 'Varus, give me back my legions' after that general lost three legions and - horror of horrors! - their eagles in the battle (ambush) of Teutoberg Forest.
This novel follows some key characters from that novel (and survivors of the ambush), from a revolt by the Legionaries through to another battle in a forest/bog land and is told from both the point of view of the Romans and from the German war leader Arminius (who successfully carried out that ambush).
Like the previous entry in the series, Ben Kane's knowledge of the period definitely shines through in this!

AJaneClark (3975 KP) rated Seventh Son (2015) in Movies

Ageing master wizard John, played by Jeff Bridges, needs an apprentice when a malicious witch (Julianne Moore) escapes from her confines. After searching high and low, John finds Thomas (Ben Barnes), seventh son of the seventh son and hopes that he can learn the art and help the locals as the blood moon rises. Set in the 18th century the battle between good and evil, light and dark, see Tom and his visions undergo battle training quickly, learn the skills needed to be an “exorcist” and try not to fall in love with a witch from the other side played by Alicia Vikander. With great casting, including appearances from Kit Harrington and Olivia Williams; we see some good acting. The storyline was good, but had some holes, a lack of believability in places and some of the scripting was poor. But overall worth a watch
Rodney Barnes (472 KP) rated Spider-Man 2 (2004) in Movies

Best Spiderman in the McGuire era
I didn't think that they could do better than the first Tobey Spider-Man movie. I was proven wrong. Spider-Man 2 was my favorite one in this trilogy. The battle sequences were better and the story was good too. Peter struggling with his feelings for Mary Jane and his responsibility as Spider-Man. The only scene I thought was silly is when Aunt May was taken hostage by Doc Ock and after a battle with Spider-Man he drops her and Spider-Man saves her by throwing her up and she hooks her umbrella on a statue saving herself. Very silly. The best scene however, is when Spider-Man stops a runaway train from crashing saving everyone aboard. Overall this is a great movie. I still don't care for Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane but that's just me
