Rollicking but not exactly thought-through fantasy yarn, Ray Harryhausen's valedictory movie. Strapping lad Perseus attempts to win the hand of the princess Andromeda, but must contend with sea monsters, giant scorpions, the Medusa and so on. Meanwhile Laurence Olivier sits on the throne of Zeus and counts his appearance fee.

Knockabout stuff, if not strong on mythological accuracy or internal coherence, very much in the vein of the same producer's Jason and the Argonauts. Solid (if slightly eggy) performances from a good cast. Everything is in service to Harryhausen's animation sequences, anyway, which are technically immaculate even if the movie lacks a single stand-out set-piece like the skeleton battle or allosaurus-roping sequence of previous projects. Looks like a great movie when you're about eleven; pretty good fun when you grow up, too.

A better cut
Well I gave this a go as the first film was noticeably cut quite a bit and just didn't feel like a complete film. This version is considerably longer, 3hrs 45mins before the credits roll, but it does feel a more complete film. With more back stories on some characters and longer battle scenes. The SFX for Steppenwolf is better. Overall the tone and feel of the film is better.
To be honest I didn't feel like the film dragged despite the long run time as so much is crammed in. I've seen other films over 3 hours long that felt tediously slow in comparison. So if you haven't seen it yet definitely watch this version, worth checking out if you already liked the first version.

"This would battle Sufjan Stevens for my favourite album. Lau broke onto the folk scene around the same time as us, and we always felt a kinship because we were also trying to push the boundaries of what we were doing. Where do we fit into folk? I don't know. It's funny you saying you think of us as really established, but we've only won two Radio 2 Folk Awards out of 13 nominations in all those years, and one of those was an audience vote. Good old audiences!
 I've known Aidan since his teens, and he's a really interesting, experimental fiddler. Kris has a great voice, and like me, grew up with his family loving folk. Becky's worked with Martin too, who's great. Live, they're always on fire, often quite anarchic, so exciting, and so full of energy."

"I’d have to say number one is the Russian War and Peace, which is eight hours long [laughs] and is, I think, the greatest film ever made. Just in scope, and size, and the genius of Sergei Bondarchuk, and the majesty of it. It took 10 years to make, and everyone in it ages the 10 years [they do] in the book. So there are no other actors playing the other people; the children all grow 10 years and so do the older people. That’s pretty amazing in itself. And there was no CGI, so when you see the Battle of 1812 of Borodino it seems like there are just 50,000 soldiers on horseback. It was made by the Russian government, which is why they had access to everything and so much money. I would have to say that was my number one."

"A tough, energetic chase film from Japan in the late
 seventies, based on a true story, with a strong performance by Ken Ogata as an 
outwardly charming con man and serial killer. It differs from the formal style
 of the great Japanese filmmakers like Ozu, to whom Imamura was
 an assistant. When Imamura started directing, he wanted to make films as unlike Ozu’s
 as possible, and Vengeance Is Mine is the best example of that. He leaves all judgment of his characters to the viewer, and the film is both operatic
 and contemporary. Beautifully photographed, it’s at times surreal and at other
 times plays like a documentary, which some viewers have found confusing,
 especially Imamura’s fracturing of the timeline. Those who love film and know 
Imamura’s others, like The Eel and The Battle of Nayarama, will find this one
 essential."
