Awix (3310 KP) rated Elves (1989) in Movies
Dec 24, 2020
Bargain-basement everything-but-the-kitchen-sink horror movie. Three young women accidentally summon up a homicidal elf as part of a conspiracy to take over the world. Features a lengthy scene in which a department-store Santa (Dan Haggerty) engages in a gun battle with neo-Nazi agents, while the young female leads are stalked by a knife-wielding glove puppet. (The film is not nearly as good as it sounds.)
Sort of a slasher movie, sort of a monster movie, but definitely tasteless and tacky schlock by any reasonable metric. It seems to be trying to play the knowingly-ironic card at a few points, but it's simply not accomplished enough to pull that off: it looks cheap, sounds cheap, has long stretches where not much happens, and there's the obligatory badly-edited and confusing climax. Would be virtually unwatchable if not for an heroic performance by Dan Haggerty, who for some reason is taking this fiasco seriously. Nasty, brutish, but not nearly short enough.

Emma @ The Movies (1786 KP) rated 12 Strong (2018) in Movies

12 Strong tells the story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11; under the leadership of a new captain, the team must work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban.
This was definitely a film for the guys... and I say that because it was me and about ten lads in the cinema for this screening.
The cast of actors were brilliant, and it really felt like the story was performed with respect. It showed the sides of missions that we can only speculate about, so I really hope this one was done accurately.
One thing I did wonder... did they give Hemsworth coloured contacts for after his first battle? Because after all that talk of seeing the toll war takes on a man in his eyes I really felt like I could see the difference... so if they didn't, that script sure was good at sucking me in.

Emma @ The Movies (1786 KP) rated Edie (2017) in Movies

This was a really emotional film, I was surprised quit how much of it got to me. There's a genuine battle between loving and hating Edie for a significant portion of the film. While I felt the triumph of the whole endeavour, I'm not really sure that I came out liking her. Or several of the characters for that matter. The only one I really came out liking was Jonny, who let's face it, was too nice for his own good.
It's a story of perseverance, and you do need some to make it through. It says that the film is 1hr 42. It felt like every minute of that, and several more. I wasn't so bored that I was making shopping lists in my head, but had I been watching it at home I'd have switched channels. It is a nice film, that I'm glad I watched. But I won't be watching it again.

A Hardy Picard Outing
Well for a Star Trek feature film this was fairly meh. If it had been a two part mid-season episode I could get more behind it.
I enjoyed Tom Hardy’s character, Shinzon, and felt he did more for this film than usual cast who seemed to be going through the motions. The cringe-worthy Riker / Troi wedding got this off to a painful stat. The B4 plot line was predictable and unoriginal - shock Data has a brother - wait where have I heard that before.
It was nice to have Romulans feature in a big screen outing and I thought the Senate intrigue was good as was big space battle (really be a disaster if they messed that up!) Could of been worse (I’m looking at you Insurrection) but for the last TNG outing would of hoped for something with more impact (I’m looking at you First Contact.)

Review for Rebels in general:
Although this is an animated show, that aired on Disney XD, it's entertaining for adults as well. Normally, they don't really show people dying on kids shows, but the Stormtrooper body count is pretty high.
This show introduced some of my new favorite characters, and brought in Clone Wars characters, which I loved. The story lines were interesting, and the show did a good job of featuring some of the Skywalker Saga characters, but didn't repeat things we'd already seen. The show ends about 1 year before the Battle of Yavin (BBY). I would actually watch a live action show featuring some of the members of the Phoenix Squad. Mostly Hera, she was probably my favorite.
This also gave us the gift of introducing Grand Admiral Thrawn into the new canon, and they did so well with the characterization. I'm not going to lie, I would love an appearance by Thrawn in Episode IX.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Jaws (1975) in Movies
Aug 26, 2019 (Updated Aug 26, 2019)
Spielberg's exemplary suspense-fright machine remains the only killer shark movie you will ever need to watch. A two-course fish supper: the first half concerns police chief Roy Scheider's attempts to persuade the self-serving authorities of the danger posed by a marauding shark (post-Watergate subtext is fairly obvious); the second sees Scheider, bright young oceanographer Richard Dreyfuss, and salty sea dog Robert Shaw setting off on a primal quest to slay the monster, in a boat which may well prove to be of inadequate size.
Spielberg does an excellent job of hiding the pulpy horror-story origins of the tale, swathing it in plausible small-town Americana, low-key humour and excellent characterisation; John Williams' score is, needless to say, essential to the enterprise. The battle to the death in the second half is superbly constructed, paced and executed. Superb entertainment; I am happy to report that over forty years on, Jaws remains entirely capable of making cinema audiences squirm and scream.

What You Have Here is a Polergeist Remake
So i remember seeing this trailer back in 2015 and i was scaried. What i didnt realize it was a remake. Flashfoward couple years later, i realize now that this is a remake. A okay remake. Not a great remake, but a okay remake.
All seems well for Eric Bowen (Sam Rockwell), wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt) and their three children as they move into their new house in the suburbs of Illinois. Soon, youngest daughter Maddy (Kennedi Clements) begins talking to an imaginary friend, or so the family thinks. It's not long before sinister spirits wreak havoc in the home, holding Maddy captive and forcing the parents to consult a team of parapsychologists who engage the supernatural entities in a battle for the girl's freedom.
I like sam rockwell and i thought he was good.
I would reccordmend this movie, even though its a remake.
