I don't know what happened... I mean, I do, but it's a weak excuse, especially when you look at True Blood.

True Blood stopped following the books at the end of the first season and still managed to maintain enough of the story to give a half-decent ending.

GoT stopped having books to follow after the 6th season, but the show was already going downhill.
