Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2277 KP) rated Yankee Doodle Dead in Books
Feb 17, 2024
Retired General Shot on the 4th
Annie Darling is getting ready for the festival that Broward’s Rock is hosting for the fourth of July. Not only is her bookstore selling at a booth, but she’s on the library board, which is putting everything on, and is the benefit of the proceeds. Unfortunately, a newcomer to the island is also on the board, and making waves there and all over the island. So when someone shoots him during the fireworks, the only real question is who didn’t have a motive. Can Annie and her husband, Max, figure out what happened?
I struggled a bit with the first half of the book. It was obvious early on who the victim would be. While we were setting up suspects and motives, his antics were such an over the top cliché, it wasn’t always fun. Fortunately, things get better once Annie and Max start investigating. We get a somber yet logical climax, but we still have fun with all the series regulars along the way. I hope the victims get a little less predictable in future books, but series fans will still enjoy this one.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Dyed in the Wool in Books
Apr 27, 2018
Another thrilling page-turner from James. A definite step up in form from the previous instalment, Fire in the Blood. Cullen is this time part of the team investigating the apparent suicide of a young man in West Lothian. As usual, the case expands from there with the body count increasing and the twists and turns, lies and confessions are in abundance.
Other than one or two slightly clunky plot devices (working out someone's identity from their chat board user name) this was a compelling, well-written crime novel.

Alex (10 KP) rated Captain Sonar in Tabletop Games
May 2, 2019
A board game without turns!!
You hunt your opposing team in their submarine using sonar, drones and your wits.
You have to keep track of their movements you own subs position and condition. All in real time as players shout commands and damage conditions the game is chaotic and fast paced.
Teamwork will win the day.
My only negative is you need at least 6 players for this game to come alive.

Andrew Lane (15 KP) rated Rocketman (2019) in Movies

Succeeds where Bohemian Rhapsody kinda felt short with, this is a fantastic, no holds bar film that perfectly depicts the story of Elton John's early career and his many struggles. The use of John's songs is expertly used to help progress the story and those sequences help make this a feast for the eyes. Taron Egerton shines as Elton.

Red Otter (340 KP) rated Terraforming Mars: Venus Next in Tabletop Games
Jun 6, 2019
Venus Next adds Venus to the list of areas that can be terraformed, through either cards or a standard project. However, it is not required to in order to end the game. It sits as an optional board that takes up space. This is my least favourite of the expansion as it doesn't feel part of the game as closely as it should. It simply feels extra, another source of points. It adds floaters which can be a cool way of doing resources but as a expansion that improves the game? I disagree with that
